Mario refused to put a Pens jersey on at the '84 draft and refused to play for the Canadian world jrs team - no mega trade though

The only situation I can think of is when the drafted player indicates strongly that he is unwilling to sign with his draft team.  They won't always reveal prior to the draft that they dislike certain teams drafting them.

Even then though it seems more like making the best of a bad situation than it does actually being better than just trading the pick to begin with.

Storm's game today solidifies my thinking that he will not be ranked 5th much longer. I was hoping the Leafs would be able to get him, but he may go as high as 3rd and the Leafs seem destined to pick 4th to 6th. One can still hope....

Don't worry, if Hannifin falls to the leafs, we'll take him and laugh our way to the bank.

I see it being McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Strome - that's just my take. If the Leafs fall to 5th or 6th they would miss out on him. That's all I am saying.

I agree ending up in 6th would be disappointing, but 5th is fine - Marner is no slouch.  Thankfully, Columbus has pulled a good lead on us.

There's still the nightmare of picking 6th in the unlikely event we finish 5th and a team previously behind us wins the lottery. Low odds, but still a chance...

There is a 37% chance that someone between 6th and 14th wins the draft lottery.  I'd be disappointed if we don't land one of McDavid, Eichel, Hanafin, Strome, or Marner so to ensure we can have one of those 5 we need to not pass Carolina.

Draft-ish related:

23. Finally, he [Matt Puempel] told a good story about the 2011 draft, where the Senators took him 24th overall.

?Toronto had told me if I was there they would grab me. They traded for the 22nd pick, so I was anxious and excited, but they didn?t take me. Then Ottawa moved up? and they were interested, too. My agent (Pat Morris) winked at me, and I knew.?

Suffice it to say Puempel, who grew up a Leaf fan, switched allegiances very quickly.

So the Leafs were idiots and liars.

It kind of sounds as though they made that promise while they still had the #25 and #30 so the trade up was probably specifically to get Biggs.

So idiots, sure. Liars...eh.

I bet they were going to take him with their next pick.  Not that I think he's anything special, but certainly better than Biggs.

Don't forget that the Leafs also had the 25th pick and if my memory serves me correctly, ottawa made a trade to jump ahead of the Leafs right before that pick.

My bet is that Burkie thought puempel would be there at 25 and didn't expect any trades to jump ahead of him.

They had Percy actually rated higher than Biggs, remember? So I doubt they would have picked Biggs and then taken Puempel ahead of Percy.

And really, I'll take any chance at criticizing that move. It was inexcusably dumb then and it's even worse now. Puempel was in the NHL around the time Biggs was having his tires pumped for not sucking as a 4C in the AHL.

If it makes you feel any better it wasn't the brightest decision in the world to jump up and draft Puempel either. Ottawa dealt the #35 and #48 pick for #24 and Detroit got Tomas Jurco and Xavier Ouellet with those picks and both of them have played in the NHL this year.
