2016-2017 NHL Thread

From a strategic point, you have to figure the worst case scenario of the shot going past you is preferable to the worst case scenario of the puck hitting McJesus.

Yeah, basically. When the city got the Raptors through the expansion process they immediately had to start looking into building a new arena as neither of the existing Toronto ones were good fits for Basketball(the Raptors actually played their first few seasons in the Skydome instead of the Gardens). The ACC was being designed as a building for the Raptors when the precursor to MLSE bought the Raptors and turned it into a multi-use venue. They never shared the building under separate owners.

I may be mis-remembering, but, I believe the-soon-to-be-known-as-MLSE also owned the land where the ACC currently resides and were planning on building a new arena for the Leafs there, any way.

Pretty much. I'm in the Clear the Body and Sightlines camp.

Wikipedia says the Raptors bought the building from Canada Post and construction had already started when they were bought by Almost-MLSE so that seems wrong but I remember there being some boondoggle about the price of the land that Wikipedia doesn't cover.

Possibly. Their timeline doesn't jive with my memory. I pretty distinctly remember knowing the site of the old Canada Post building was going to be the new Leafs' arena well before they broke ground - but, again, that could be my mis-remembering/misunderstanding the situation at the time.

My memory isn't great on this either but to be fair I was 15 or so when all of this was happening so I was already "listening to Pink Floyd".

So that was the massive problem that needed fixing, right?

I hope that the GMs politely laughed them out of the room.

Tough to be too snarky with guys who are essentially developing your players for free at the expense of their own domestic leagues.

Well, I mean, I did say "politely". I understand your point/their frustration, but I imagine those pleas by the Swedish officials fell on largely deaf ears.

The Leafs were planning to build their arena right above Union Station.  The thinking being that fans could get to and from the arena without having to walk outside, similar to Montreal.

Almost certainly you're right. I just wonder if maybe this is a signal from some people in Swedish hockey that they're not 100% thrilled with the arrangement. Losing players to the NHL is one thing, the AHL is another.

So, immediately north of the ACC? Like, literally so close, they'd be attached to each other if they were both built?

Cool, so I guess we'll just to have wait for every list to be individually leaked. Great idea NHL.

I mean, if you get a chance to openly antagonize your passionate fans...you'd be crazy not to take it.

Hey, the NHL website gives you goals, assist and stats when it doesn't crash.  Stop being greedy.  Bettman polled a random person in the middle of Arizona who said he didn't care about advance stat tracking.  And that whole knowing salaries and NMC/NTC stuff.  No reason for you to need to know that because Lou doesn't want you to.

Pretty much.  Everyone kept referring to both arenas being a stone's throw away.  Literally, not figuratively.

I think a main sticking point was the Leafs wanted to be the primary tenant.  The Raptors had actually broken ground first, which made the Leafs stance all that more silly to have two arenas side-by-side.  Then the ownership change occurred and the rest is history.  The Leafs got in just in time to change the configurations of the arena, which if recall correctly included more private boxes as well as seat colours (the Raptors plans had platinum coloured seats throughout the arena).  I actually still have the Leafs' design for their initial arena plans that I clipped out from the paper.
