2016-2017 NHL Thread

Pretty much.  Everyone kept referring to both arenas being a stone's throw away.  Literally, not figuratively.

I think a main sticking point was the Leafs wanted to be the primary tenant.  The Raptors had actually broken ground first, which made the Leafs stance all that more silly to have two arenas side-by-side.  Then the ownership change occurred and the rest is history.  The Leafs got in just in time to change the configurations of the arena, which if recall correctly included more private boxes as well as seat colours (the Raptors plans had platinum coloured seats throughout the arena).  I actually still have the Leafs' design for their initial arena plans that I clipped out from the paper.

Interesting. Had things actually played out this way, Toronto could have had its own Madison Square Gardens type situation (obviously, not a direct parallel, as the Knicks & Rags play in the same arena - more about having a facility that can host more than one major event at a time) - though, I think, from a practical perspective, it would probably have been better for them to flip the locations, and not have the ice rink above a busy, heat producing transit hub.

Was that even intentional?

100% it was.

Yeah, Kucherov said it was. Teammates say he pulls the move off in practice a lot.

The way his teammates react to it definitely lends weight to that so I guess I can believe it. Just seems like a move that entirely relies on the goalie making a terrible misread.

Lehner hasn't made a single save in the shootout this season (0-4 W/L record, 0-8 saves/shots). Kucherov was probably counting on a terrible misread.

There are some exterior renderings of the proposed arena in this twitter post.  If you click on it there is one more picture.

Pittsburgh plays in Edmonton tonight. The Pens twitter feed is straight-up trolling the Oilers here:

I was looking at the Panthers/Wild match up today, which got me wondering about Zach Parise. He's been having injury problems this year and has 39 points this season. And he is signed through 2024-25 with a cap hit of about $7.5 million. Do the Wild have any options or do they needs to ride that contract/cap hit to the bitter end?

The Blackhawks and Wild game today started at 11:30am local time. Right after DST cost them an hour too, so it'll feel like 10:30am.

It was 2-0 Chicago about 5 minutes in, they scored on their first 2 shots.

And Boudreau being Boudreau blames everything on his goalie.  That looked like two plays with some pretty horrendous defensive coverage.

It ended up decided in the 8th overtime period, a 2-1 final with shots 96-93.  Game 5 of a 7 game series, and they play again on Tuesday.

The red-hot Flames just won their tenth straight game, a 4-3 shootout win over the Penguins.  Thanks to Johnny Hockey and especially goalkeeper Brian Elliott who was a stalwart during the OT & shootout sessions, stopping Malkin, Crsoby, and then Kessel in the shootout:

Bruins keep on winning.  Since Calgary has won 10 straight they're probably due for a stinker of a game, and guess who they play next?  Oh yeah Boston.

I can see Willy pulling both of these moves off.

Bettman on new arena for the Calgary Flames:

"I actually spent an hour this afternoon with the mayor. We had a very cordial, open, candid conversation," Bettman said. "I'm hopeful that the city and the Flames can be on the same page so this can move forward as quickly as possible."

Opened in 1983, Calgary plays in the third-oldest arena in the league.

"This building was built in the 1980s, they don't build buildings like this any more," said Bettman. "It's a grand old building, it's got a great roof-line, it's historic in many ways. but these aren't the facilities that our hockey teams typically have."

"This is an old, antiquated building. And in terms of amenities for the fans, which is the most important thing, it doesn't hold a candle to what's been done in new arenas."

...it was not received well by the mayor or by many taxpayers in a city that continues to be in the throes of an economic downturn. The city suggested that the proposed cost of $890-million was too low and, with the significant clean-up required at the propose site, the price tag would be substantially more.

"I'm not sure that people that focus on the deal in the appropriate way would say no taxpayer money," said Bettman. "If in fact, a new project with development creates new revenues and new taxes that didn't exist before, reinvesting it in the city, reinvesting it infrastructure, reinvesting it in quality of life, seems to make a lot of sense to me."

Bettman thinks that the timeline for a new facility should be sooner, than later.

"The longer this goes, I think in some respects it gets a little more difficult, building costs go up, the amount of time it will take to get into a new arena situation will be longer," he said. "The new building in Edmonton, for example, is doing a lot more business. Perhaps some of it is at the expense of Calgary in terms of concerts and the like."
