2016-2017 NHL Thread

Corsica.hockey is down for the offseason (to work on improvements).

That means we'll have to argue with each other with the cudgel that is boxstats and intangibles for the next few months.

Awww yeah. Assistant Paul Maclean parted ways with the Ducks amicably at the end of his contract.

Nylander is too small to be successful in the NHL.  We should have drafted Ritchie.

What a pile of covfefe.

Big changes being recommended by the Competition Committee (via Elliotte Friedman):

I hate this league sometimes.

On Saturday night Kypreos reported that they'd be discussing the offside reviews, and the fact that there are an estimated EIGHTY (80!) slashes per game that don't get called. They apparently decided both aren't issues worth dealing with.

TSN's list of the Top-30 Free Agents this year isn't very pretty: http://www.tsn.ca/three-caps-and-a-hab-top-tsn-s-free-agent-frenzy-list-1.771863

How bad is it this year? Jared Cowen made the list.

The bottom 5 of that list is legitimately one of the funniest things I've read this year.

When people talk about those slashes though they tend to talk about things like the Crosby slash on Methot and I really don't know how you'd even begin to try to get those out of the game short of effectively calling 10-15 extra penalties per game.

I would take an Alzner or Russell 4 x 4 years sounds about right.

I'm still not convinced #27 is a real person.

I don't know how you fix it either to be honest without a never-ending parade to the box like you said (although I do think that if you start calling them early in a game/season it probably will stop/limit slashes later in the game/season), but it's weird to see them identify the problem exactly and just not do anything.

I don't remember if I posted this when the Crosby thing happened, but this is Johhny Gaudreau getting slashed 21 times in the hands area in a game against Minnesota this season. He was out 2 weeks with a fractured finger after this:

None of those were penalized, despite most of them falling under the rule against slashing: "Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent's body, the opponent's stick, or on or near the opponent's hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing." We have teams specifically using measures they know are illegal to shut down opposing players because they also know they aren't getting called for it. If one of those gets called in the 1st period that rush to slash him probably slows down.

I imagine they came to the same conclusion we did, and felt there wasn't really a good way to institute a rule change or new rule to address it. There will probably a suggestion to the refs that they call it a little tighter, but, since it doesn't require a change to the rules, it's not part of the recommendations.

Looking forward to the 8 hours of coverage they'll have to spend discussion how Mike Condon is still available.

Brian Burke speaking to Cdn. Club. Says when Flames proposed Calgary Next, he's surprised city didn't say thank you

Ok. Brian Burke just said the thing that the Flames said they wouldn't say. Told season ticket holder the Flames could leave w/o new rink.

Well, this worked for Edmonton. Let's see if Calgary falls for it too.

Oh god he also said this:

"If you don't want to get a concussion, be a swimmer" - Brian Burke

Add that tweet to the lawsuit.

These are all from some Q&A session at a luncheon in Calgary today.

Ignoring the evidence on concussions is absurd.  The NHL is quite disgusting at this point in time.  There is no disputable evidence that head trauma is associated with concussions.  The fact that Bettman/the owners/their lawyers are still playing this game is not good.

As for the arena ultimatums.  I hope Calgary stands strong.

And yet TSN and Sportsnet will devote hours upon hours on Canada Day discussing the free agent frenzy of this year's "crop".

I don't expect them to bite the hand that feeds them very hard, if at all.
