Brian Campbell retired, which qualifies as mid-July NHL news.

Can't wait to hear what excitement will be awaiting us in early august.

This sarcasm here isn't warranted at all.  There are plenty of interesting developments going on.

For instance, here is front page news on tsn.ca this Monday afternoon:

http://www.tsn.ca/report-pirri-joins-klein-in-switzerland-1.806211

From my perspective, this sort of news really calls into question what NYR is planning to do to fill out their 4th line...will they even have a 4th line?  I don't know!  Let's talk about it.

This is very interesting and worthy of discussion here, and if you disagree, then you're obviously just a Leafs fan, which you don't want to be because then you're a notch down in the hierarchy of NHL fandom, and that's a bad look.

Agreed. I mean there's even Leafs-related news out there right now. Matt Frattin just signed with the Chinese club in the KHL. How that bombshell didn't break the forums is beyond me.

And little hockey break will do some good, so we'll come back refreshed and raring to go for the real action (training camps, etc).  Well, I need my hockey break.  ;D

I saw Dominic Moore playing ping pong with Melanie Ng on Breakfast Television this morning.  Does that count as Leafs summer news?

There's apparently a hockey twitter war going on about WAR/GAR if you're all that bored.

No, we're not THAT bored. I mean, I just installed MS Solitaire on my phone. That'd keeping me occupied.

I think it's more like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQHUAJTZqF0

He was well ahead of his time.

The Campbell news wasn't big news but he did have an interesting career. Here's someone who was a 6th round pick, wasn't a full time NHLer until his draft+6 year, didn't even crack 30 points in the league until the year he turned 27 and got Norris votes in seven seasons during a ten year span.

Meanwhile, here's a list of some of the defensemen he at least spent some time with in the NHL: Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Aaron Ekblad, Dustin Byfuglien, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Christian Erhoff(very little with those last two, but still).

The NBA with some new uniform news:

Another significant change coming this fall involves adjusting the nomenclature of what were formerly known as ?home? and ?away? uniforms. Beginning with the 2017-18 season, home teams are not automatically assigned to wear white uniforms, and instead will be allowed to choose which uniform they want to wear for each home game. Visiting teams will then choose a contrasting uniform from their available options.

Instead of ?home? and ?away,? each team will now have four primary uniform ?editions? from which to choose. The ?Association Edition? will be the team?s traditional white uniform, while what was formerly the road uniform will now be designated as the ?Icon Edition.? The two remaining editions will be revealed later this fall.

Along with those four uniform editions, eight teams will have a ?Classic Edition? available this fall, a nod to these team?s most iconic looks which they can also choose to occasionally wear.

Pretty cool, I hope the NHL follows suit eventually. A team like the Leafs or Habs could never completely re-design their uniforms in this day and age. A change like this would allow them to still hold onto those timeless designs while still having a new look as well during the season.

I haven't tracked his career too closely, but just judging by his profile and how his numbers look on the surface, does it look like someone who was under utilized in the clutch n' grab era, but really blossomed as the league shifted? His numbers explode coming out of the 04/05 lockout, but the skill was always there (see junior numbers).

Maybe. His draft year and draft -1 numbers aren't anything special so I don't think it's a situation where he was lights out but just doubted because of size or whatever.

It's also important to keep in mind just how bad some of those late-career Hasek on the Sabres teams were with Stu Barnes as their #1 center. I don't think it's a coincidence that Campbell's numbers/career took off with Briere, Drury and Vanek showing up either.

Seriously, look at some of those teams Hasek dragged into the playoffs.

Ah, that's the context I needed. Thanks!

Outside of outliers like Karlsson and Burns (sort of), I wonder how forward-dependant defenseman point production is. Which also begs the question, why are they still judged primarily by points and shutdowny-meanness by most front offices and coaches?

I think this early advanced stat has a lot to do with why certain teams were willing to splash cash on analytically-tire-fire defensemen this offseason (and really, for always). Remember, "consistent subjectivity is objective!"

More grist for the mill in response.
