If Martin still can't get into the line-up that's amazing.

Leivo probably sees this as his big chance, except when they fill out the lineup card tomorrow and he sees Martin in and he's out.

Yes, Hyman - Nylander - Brown worked very well.
Kapanen adds a similar dimension to when Marner was with Bozak and JvR (NZ carry), but he'll be faster and more straightforward about it. Actually pretty reminiscent of a faster, more responsible Kessel, minus the shot.

This is also fun:

Can you imagine this passing for a scoop anywhere else? We don't know what the injury is or its severity but the team has generally confirmed what vague area of the body is affected. Gotta get that to the presses!

I'm surprised they were even that specific.  Although my dog could have diagnosed that it was shoulder injury.

Seriously, though, I wonder if Matthews is going to have to modify his playing style a bit.  Because he's very good at it, it seems like he tries to (rather violently) gyrate out of a lot of tight situations while still maintaining puck control, putting himself into awkward positions of vulnerability.  Last night's injury wasn't like that exactly, I realize.

He's definitely been getting hit more often and harder lately from what I can see. Other teams have seemed to figure out how to slow him down a bit. And I think you're right, he does seem to put himself into some vulnerable positions. I was thinking last night that he kinds of plays like a small finesse player, in a big body. He seems to not be as nimble as someone like Nylander, who is great at avoiding hits. May have to adjust the style a bit, maybe even become a bit more physical himself. Either that, or we need to put Martin on his LW  ;)

Or bring back Freezer McClaren

A few years ago I had a shoulder injury skiing, sort of an innocuous fall really.  Shoulder was separated but no tear thank god. Still could not lift my arm above my waist for 6 months and still have no strength to through a ball like I used to.  This is of great concern about Auston, but thank god it was not a heavy concussion.

I remember the last time Terry Evanston, great CFL receiver ever played. I was at the game and Terry caught a down and out right in front of us.  He tiptoed out of bounds but didn't see the Argos coming to crush him, one hit him high the other low from both sides (I think one was Marv Luster) and that was the last play of his storied career.  Similar, but not as vicious as the hit on Matthews.

Man I just google Terry to see if I spelled his name correctly and read about his life and near death after football. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9T0YJAkbk  Absolutely stunning story, sad and inspirational at the same time. I had no clue

Sorry, I read your post.  It was good.  I just kept waiting for you to say "and I had an onion on belt, which was the style at the time"

No "Black Garlic" actually, which my chef son just introduced me to. Pungent like the old Leafs but better cooked up like the new Leafs.

Just for kicks, Leafs defence possession stats since December 31st:

                    GP    CF%    GA/60  GF%
Carrick1752.61.5746.2
Dermott2351.71.1969.6
Rielly2151.12.4654.6
Gardiner2749.12.2459.6
Hainsey2548.02.4555.0
Borgman1147.23.4246.7
Zaitsev1546.13.4450.0
Polak2043.72.9141.7

edit: added some more stats that I thought were fun.

So, I know it's still early, but, with how far ahead the Leafs are from 4th in their division, I thought it would be fun to look at their magic number for eliminating teams from passing them. Because it's so early, I've ignored tie-breakers, as ROWs are still very much unsettled. These totals represent the total points gained by the Leafs or lost by the team chasing them that would guarantee the Leafs finish the season with more points:

Florida: 30
Detroit: 25
Ottawa: 21
Montreal: 20
Buffalo: 11

An update on these numbers heading into tonight's games:

Florida: 24
Detroit: 18
Montreal: 12
Ottawa: 8
Buffalo: 3

It's early, but looking forward into next season, seems they're likely to have some holes to fill, and I'm not sure the internal options are ready...

Hyman - Matthews - Kapanen
Marleau - Kadri - Marner
(Johnsson?) - Nylander - Brown
_______ - ______ - ______
Leivo, Martin

Rielly - ________
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott - Hainsey
Carrick? (he's an RFA)

Andersen
McElhinney
