2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs - General Discussion

A loss to Arizona last night means that Tampa is now only 2 points ahead of Boston with the Bruins having 2 games in hand. The two teams play each other twice still and those games will probably decide who we play in the 1st round.

We all knew that Komarov was coming back in right away. The issue now is will Babcock take him out after a few games when the question isn't "can you take spots away from someone because of an injury" but "can you take spots away from someone because someone else is clearly better".

I mean, the answer to that will still be "no" probably but we'll see.

It took him a season and a half for Martin*. Komarov expires at the end of this season. I think Johnsson has played his way to a spot next season, guaranteed (although Babcock will talk about every day being a tryout). I think Komarov might get resigned with Johnsson moving up to 3rd line depending on how JvR shakes out, or if other big fish are on the line.

* I'd argue this was less to do with Martin (who is serviceable) and maybe more to do with giving Kapanen or whoever time to hit the level required.

Some thoughts from Bourne on Johnsson vs Komarov and hmm, Nylander at centre...

This is my way of keeping both Komarov and Johnsson:
Johnsson - Matthews - Kapanen
Marleau - Nylander - Hyman
Komarov - Kadri - Marner
JvR - Bozak - Brown

Mitch Marner is the new face of Intact Insurance.
The ads are hilarious. Mitch is pretty natural on camera.

I'm becoming more comfortable with the idea of Tampa in the first round.

Look how tight your shirt is, can you even breath in that?

That's good.

I think I like it better than the line from Transformers 2:

Dude:  Freshman, is that your car in our bushes?
Sam:  No, this is a friend of mines, he just went to see if he could get you a tighter shirt.
Wingman:  There are no tighter shirts, we checked.

Id rather play Matthews and Nylander together for 20 minutes a night and not worry too much who is on the 4th line.

Also, breaking up Marleau-Kadri-Marner to replace Plekanec by Johnsson doesn?t seem like the right move ....

Agreed, I think the Leafs can make it a series with Tampa, as I think the two teams play similar styles.  You have to give the edge to Tampa Bay as they have the better defence, but I think the forwards match up fairly well.  I think both goalies on both teams have struggled lately, so if they were to play one another it may come down to which one of them can find their mojo first.

They also have the better forwards, at least lines one and two.  But certainly far worse upsets have occurred.  We just need our goalie to be a little hotter or to just get a little luckier.

I used to work in the commercial industry. Mitch is not a b__h when it come to acting. He actually has chops...although they may be Pork Chops.

Martin stole the second spot.

BTW this proves my longstanding assertion that UFAs will take less to come here because they can more than make it up in commercials, endorsements, etc.

Let me sell this a bit.

- 2 R and 2 L Centres
- Each centre is paired with a winger on the opposing shot that can carry the puck with them in transition through the neutral zone
- Each line has a defensively responsible presence or two
- Each line has a forechecker that plays on the opposite side of the centre (e.g. plays without the puck)
- There are two shutdown lines and two attack lines; knowing how deep most teams are at the forward position and how coaches traditionally line up their talent, guess which lines get to run over lesser competition?
- Other than Bozak's, some games, Babcock never needs to worry about which line is on the ice and doesn't even need to play matchup if he doesn't feel like it
- 1st shift after the PK can be Marleau-Matthews-Nylander or Kadri-Matthews-Marner, followed by JvR-Bozak-Brown
- The only tricky bit is who centres coming off the PP. Usually that's 4C's, and all our C's have PP time split between them

Anyway, this is 3 1st lines and a scoring 3rd which is arguably a 2nd on most teams. It's easy to mix and match back to super lines when we need to shorten the  bench.

I think it's pretty safe to say this mid-sized insurance company is throwing around untold millions on spokespeople for local ads.

I mean, sure, if we're talking like $25K less per season . . . (if Marner even got that much for these ads)

It's wonderful that you agree with me!

I may not work for that ad agency, but my background is in advertising and I have worked in Canadian ad agencies, so, you know, I do have some insight here.
