Someone didn't want to wait until after the Calder Cup.

Another potential Keefe spot taken.

Carolina will probably take some heat here for the old "hiring a former franchise icon" play but to Brind'Amour's credit he has served as an assistant with the team for the past 7 years.

Carolina's also officially announced that Don Waddell will be the GM, which is pretty funny:

I think Dundon just wanted puppets.

I think that perhaps Dundon didn't quite understand how small the pool of people would be that would be interested in working for an owner who is clearly going to be micromanaging.

Jesus christ neither of these defencemen are even close to worth the 10th overall draft pick AND they've already made this exact same mistake when they traded a 1st AND a 2nd for Griffin freakin' Reinhart.

Seriously, is everybody in Edmonton just completely stupid?

I'd take the 10th for Zaitsev. Cost controlled! Accustomed to winter weather!

I don't think the idea is a terrible one on its face, if you need D help and don't love the prospects available to you then there really aren't better options. I just think that, and Reinhart is an example of this, odds are you're not going to get anyone that another team is all that high on.

I mean, use the Leafs as an example. Would you trade Dermott for the 10th pick? I'd consider it, sure, but honestly with the 10th pick I don't know that you can just assume you'd draft someone all that better than Dermott and you'd definitely delay them contributing for a few years.

I think if you're dealing a pick for a defenseman, you're probably better off aiming at someone older and more established if you want real help. Like you say, Sanheim and Larsson might be good but they're not going to solve what's going on in Edmonton.

Right, I think if they wanted to trade it for say... Tanev I guess, or any other mid-20s #3 type defenceman, I wouldn't criticize a trade like that from Edmonton's point of view.

It's the idea that they want to trade it for a younger, 20-21 year old defenceman that doesn't make any sense to me... especially in regards to the two defenceman that were given as examples. I don't see any kind of trade like that working for them because it's either a Dermott situation like you gave where it doesn't make sense for the Leafs to backtrack or it's a Sanheim/Larsson situation where the defenceman very likely isn't going to be a top-4 guy so the value is completely out of whack.

If nothing else, if you're going to trade for a mid-20's, #3 type defenseman you're better off trading the #10 pick and not, say, Taylor Hall.

I think it's just a case of needing to build some optimism into the deal. I think deep down in Edmonton they know the same thing we know here in Toronto which is that we can talk about working out deals for Tanev or Trouba or some other mid-tier guy to improve a so-so group but what's really separating them from a real contender is a legit #1 type and they have no real clue how they're going to land that. Trading for a Tanev type might help the club but it doesn't help them into that upper echelon. Trading for someone young at least carries with it the hope that they exceed their projected development and become that kind of guy.

I agree with you that neither of those guys is likely to even approach that sort of thing but I get where that impulse comes from.

Oh man. Let me tell you about how much Matt Martin pumped up our team at the Centennial Classic.

It's almost starting to look like having an ownership policy where only two considerations, amount willing to pay and lack of interest in moving the team, will let some nutjobs through.
