2017 Off-season Trades/Signings Discussion

Didn't Percy get smushed with concussion and injury issues?

He did, but even prior to that (I believe that occurred in his 2nd pro season) I didn't think he was developing into a NHLer.

Marc Methot traded to Dallas for a goalie selected in 7th round and a 2nd rounder in 2020. Doesn't sound like he is highly valued. Guess he wasn't as highly wanted by Sens after all, if they couldn't do better than that!

Pens picking up Reaves, and everyone chasing guys like Russell, Alzner, Methot, Girardi... copying the Leafs free agency moves from last year, eh?

This notion is popping up on Twitter already, but if Montreal gets Alzner, Tampa Bay gets Girardi, Florida continues to Tallon it up, and Ottawa continues crying into its cereal bowl by trading Phaneuf, and Boston hangs onto a fading Chara, the Leafs are looking pretty good just sitting there doing nothing.

So according to reports out there it's looking more and more like McDavid is going to blow the existing salary structure out of the water when he signs his extension. That is something that should be at the forefront of people's minds when they think of what the Leafs may have to do with Matthews in a couple years.

And they'd look even better if they did something other than nothing. Go for it.

Are you already working on the September press releases?

The Leafs shouldn't be comparing themselves to the other teams in a crummy division.

Oh no, I do want them to do something, as long as it's not what those other crummy teams are angling for.

Looks like the Brendan Smith option is off the table as McKenzie is reporting he's going to sign with the Rangers.

AAV of $4.35mil.  A....lot more than what I would have given.

Wonder if that means they couldn't come to an agreement with Shattenkirk...

I mean, the Leafs getting ahead in the division because other teams do stupid doesn't really improve their chances of getting out of the conference or winning the Cup, but, considering their cap situation, the mediocrity of the UFA class, the prices some of these guys are signing for already, etc., there may be wisdom is mostly standing pat this summer and sticking with smaller moves to shore up the 4th line/3rd pairing/depth.

It's also wildly overstating the negative impact some of those moves will have. Alzner's not a very good player but if he's in effect replacing Emelin then it's more of a push than anything and Montreal is also adding Drouin. If Girardi stinks Tampa can stop playing him but they're also going to have, presumably, a healthy Stamkos and I think one outweighs the other.

Florida's going to be healthy, Buffalo's going to get a full season of Eichel, Ottawa might replace Methot with Chabot and so on. The Leafs, provided they don't get much in the way of second year bugs, are well suited to improve without adding anyone sure but realistically the division is going to be tougher next year, not easier.

Chris Neil has good options and offers to play in the NHL next season.  He intends on playing and will select the right fit.

I'm seriously smarter than any GM who thinks that this is a good idea.

You wonder if all you need is a better backup with the rest, apart from maybe the 4C role, as not as important for now. Mirtle mentioned that maybe the best option for the Leafs is to trade for a stud D at the trade deadline next year rather than adding pieces now.

Then again the more I think of the Hamonic trade the more I would've wanted to give up that first rounder.
