We kick things off with confirmation that the Ozhiganov experiment is over.

I mean I know this is beating a dead horse and all but I honestly can't believe how much rope he got compared to Holl.

I feel like Dermot is crappy Gardiner and Holl is a crappy Dermot so I wasn't surprised. Oz's type of D man was needed. Oz, although the right type, wasn't very good.

Babcock was over in europe scouting him before they signed Oz so he was invested in the decision.  In that sense you can understand why he got more rope than Holl; Babcock doesn't know Holl from a hole in the wall so he treated him as such.

I mean Holl was on his farm team for 3 years, including last season where he was a top pairing defenceman on a championship team. I can't really buy that he was more familiar with Oz than Holl.

Yeah. I think he just saw more upside in Oz - at least in terms of how Babcock wants his defence to play. I also thought Oz looked pretty decent early, but, as the season wore on, it became clear he wasn?t an everyday player.

Babcock favoured Nielsen from a handful of viewings (because Nielsen scored), per Justin Bourne on Leafs Geeks Podcast. The Marlies staff tried to push Holl a couple of seasons ago.

Not more familiar, I mean Babcock had a hand in recruiting Oz but had nothing of the sort for Holl so he naturally favored the guy he was helping to sign

Interesting interview with Tim Leweike in the Athletic today. Summaries the Leaf scene perfectly;

"In a town that doesn?t want to be patient and has no desire to be patient and had no patience to be patient, it was much harder".

What Tim did is buy us some time to be patient, brought in Shanahan and seems the management is standing behind this rebuild.  I really think with the changes to our D that we are going to improve by leaps and bounds next season, we have some real gud young talent there.
Other stuff in the Athletic about Engvall and the possibility of him being a large upgrade over the Goat on the 4th line.  Its only going to get better and yes Babcock will be coach next year.

I thought Ozhiganov was a non-factor most nights, which for a third-pairing guy amounts to a near-positive.  He was worth a try anyhow.

Yeah I don't think he was a liability but he wasn't moving the needle either.

I don't get this line of thinking. The fans aren't patient? Maybe I don't hang out with the right fans.

Are we going to use this thread to discuss who gets traded?  I am.

The #1 priority is bolstering the defense.  We have a very capable goalie who could potentially be elite with a defense that doesn't give up so many high-grade chances.

The #2 priority is the same as the #1 priority.

The #3 priority is to acquire a winger who can finish with Nylander.  I think Nylander is showing he's meant to be a center.  Perhaps that winger might even be Johnsson or Kapanen ... if they keep Kappi I would be having him spending the summer practicing getting his shot on net about 16 hours a day.

Who they should deal?

1.  Kadri.  It's clear he's not suited to be a 3C, needs to play up the lineup to produce offensively.  The second suspension doesn't help his case for staying.  Even though he had a down season, he's our most valuable trading chip.  Downside: controlled, his sandpaper is valuable and we don't have too many others who bring it.

2.  Brown.  God love him and so forth, but we need more from that roster spot.

3.  Johnsson ... or Kapanen?  I would try to keep both since we are weak on the wing, and both have some scoring chops.  But if one has to go because of cap issues ... I'll reluctantly say Johnsson.  He's a bit ahead of Kapanen now but I think Kap has a bit higher ceiling.

To me he fell into the "he's a defensive defenseman" so by default is viewed as better defensively despite the fact that his defense was quite pedestrian.

I think the patience thing is referring to all the rushing prospects to the NHL without developing them properly, looking for the quick fix, trading away high draft picks for older players, etc.

I haven't listened yet, but if these are true (and it's Chris Johnston here, not Dreger), then yowza.

I'll never understand this line of thinking. We've lived through 50+ years of being patient. People have born and died in between the Leafs winning cups. This has nothing to do with patience and everything with management having the balls to do what it takes.

Anyone who did any prior research would've told you Oz wasn't going to stick. Not sure why Leafs brass thought he would.

Maybe, but hard to paint that on a town. Every GM/coach would do things differently.
