2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Nash was originally expected to miss 4-6 weeks with his injury. A 4 week recovery would mean he could return as soon as this upcoming Tuesday with the Leafs having 4 regular games left. 5 weeks would mean he could get in 2 regular season games. 6 weeks would mean he's back for the start of the playoffs. I'm guessing he plays at least 2 regular season games.

Can they fit him under the cap before the end of the year?

If Bogosian and Hyman get retro-LTIRd (1 + 2.25) to the end of the season it's no big deal. If Andersen comes back at the same time, then it's messier.

LTIR'ing Bogosian would be all they need to get Nash in. If they LTIR both those guys (Hyman is not confirmed to be out for the season though) then they would probably use the cap space to get Andersen back in the line-up for a game or two instead.

So, whatever happened to Joey Anderson?  Did we essentially trade Johnsson for nothing?

He's been one of the Marlies' best forwards this season. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the organization expected of him this season.

I wonder if now that they've officially locked up the playoffs if they rest some guys.

They might, but they still need to lock up 1st in the division, and they have an outside shot at the President's Trophy, so I suspect it will mostly be status quo for the next few games..

So is the thinking he'll slot in next season?

He'll get the chance to earn the spot. Didn't really want to advertise him to Seattle all that much, and the Devils didn't put in the development work into him.

If he's ready, and not taken by Seattle, yes.

I thought we agreed Seattle is taking Kerfoot?

We may think they'll take him but....I think they'll take a run at Hyman.

Isn't Hyman a UFA?

He is, but Seattle gets 3 days before the draft to talk to any potential free agents, and if they can come to an agreement with one, they become Seattle's pick from that team.

That being said, I don't see it happening.

Yes..they will have 3 days prior to the draft to negotiate with all UFAs. Seattle also has to pick 20 players under contract so I suspect they will grab a few RFAs like Dermott.

Bullfrog said:
Ah, thanks. I didn't know that.
They can only take one player per team?
Yup they have to pick 1 player per team. They could technically make a deal with a UFA and not sign them until FA starts so there is a potential you could lose 2 or more to them.

Or you could trade them someone, say Reilly Smith (after the draft) to request that they pick a particular player, like Jonathan Marchessault.

Robertson was sent to the Marlies before the game so looks like he won't be getting another game here before the playoffs, much like we all suspected... And Bogo is officially on LTIR..

...Mark Messier.

Outside of their 2 mini (mostly goaltending/regression-driven) slumps, the Leafs have only lost 4 games in regulations and only 7 overall.

That's quite impressive. When the Leafs get reasonable goaltending or don't face a goaltender playing at their absolute best, they're a pretty elite squad.

Agreed. If they get their injured back (especially Hyman), get reasonable goaltending from someone, and can avoid any other injuries before the playoffs, they actually look like a team that is a serious contender. It's hard to know how they'll match up against a team like Vegas since they haven't played, but I suppose Vegas could say the same about the Leafs.

There is a nucleus of "grit" (for lack of a better term) now that hasn't existed before. Muzzin, Bogosian, Simmonds, Foligno, Thornton in particular. This could well be Thornton's last crack at the Cup so I expect he'll be especially motivated and I think we've started to see that over the past 3 games or so.

Still prone to the odd defensive breakdown but the team has shown that they are more committed to playing in the defensive zone and are mostly doing it better than in previous years. Can't wait for the playoffs to start.
