It seems to me that the Leafs were not on his list of trade teams even though he is from SW Ontario.

Brewer on the differences in his role under Sheldon Keefe vs. Mike Babcock:
In my role, one of the main differences: Under Mike, every morning, I had a team faceoff meeting. He was very into faceoffs. Sheldon isn?t as much as dedicated to showing the team faceoffs. He would show a couple of them in the evening meetings. That?s a little bit how my role changed.
But I did even more pre-scouting and preparation for Sheldon. That was kind of my role.
Kim?s first paid position in hockey was as Sparky, the mascot for the New York Islanders from 2008 to 2011.
[...]
Starring on the ice as Sparky at least moved him in the right direction. The Islanders decided to make him one of the instructors at the youth academy, sans mask.
?In some ways you could say that was step one if you look at my career,? Kim says.
All that did was further entice him. He left his post, and costume, behind after three years.
?I decided I was gonna go all in with both of my feet in the water to try and find a coaching job,? he says.
Kim had never been a coach before. He had no business being one at the college level.
But in the middle of his mascot years, Kim managed to land an interview with Columbia University?s club team and blew his questioners away over three two-hour meetings. He was well prepared. At 24, he got the gig ahead of the 2009-10 season.
?I came in with a binder and mock practice plans and goals and visions for the program,? he says. ?Despite my lack of experience coaching, they told me they felt very good about me because of how organized I was. That was how I was able to talk my way into it.?

I ask because I'm wondering if his contract might be a problem in a flat cap moving forward for teams.

Weird, no one is trying to trade Crosby or Barzal...

I think the cap is not that much of a problem; his signing bonuses are though, as organizations are struggling to stay liquid.
The advantage (after next year), is that most of Marner's salary will be paid off, relative to cap hit. So teams that have cap space but run an internal cap would see a nice -2ishM for premium talent. But the teams that can handle the signing bonuses (14.3M, 9.608, 3x7.25M) like Chicago, Montreal, NYR, aren't necessarily running internal caps; and they're also generally depleted in the elements that the Leafs would desire.
Any Marner deal begins with a top-pairing NHL defenseman under 27 and also includes a 1st and probably a serviceable NHL winger to balance money, and the Leafs still probably 'lose' that trade.

I don't want him traded unless you're getting a package you can't refuse.Frycer14 said:Guilt Trip said:No.Frank E said:Would anyone else entertain a Karlsson for Marner deal?
It'll be a treat to look back to when the Leafs traded a guy tracking hall of fame numbers because his agent negotiated a bit more money than the fans wanted.

I wouldn't trade Marner for Karlsson straight up either but I mean Karlsson is on track to be a hall of fame defenseman and he has been traded. Good players get traded. If the right deal comes along the Leafs should do it.

Frank E said:Yeah, and really all I'm trying to do here is actually find a team and a trade that would be workable and reasonable at the same time.
