"Do you think that drafting hockey players, but wisely, can affect the fortunes of a franchise?"

Jarmo Kekalainen after drafting Chinakhov 21st: *shrugs*

2015 Boston's first round was a galaxy-brain fart.

That is a very long response for someone asking if spending wisely is good for a franchise.  I wonder how he feels about the importance of not only signing free agents, but signing good free agents.

The verbosity was invested into describing their process for wise spending. I believe it is also something of a reaction to the situation he was hired into as well, when previous decision-making was not about due process.

Oh man.  It was bad at the time, but when you look at the 3 players taken immediately after their 3 picks...w00f.

I don't have the slightest idea what that answer says or what the question is supposed to provoke. "No, I don't think spending wisely affects the fortunes of a franchise" would be said by who, exactly?

His former boss, who gave Bobrovsky $70mil?

I mean I get your general point about how not-valuable those types of interviews/responses can be, but I do think there are GMs out there who are well aware that they sometimes aren't spending wisely but do it anyway because they think they'll be the exception to the rule. You even talked the other day about how $4mil is generally the standard price for a defensive defenceman like Zaitsev despite the fact that those deals are almost always seen as problems later on.
Wasn't it Olive Oil that asked the question and absolves Popeye Joyce of the ignorance of the question.  Dammit Kyle I'm a Doctor not an Astronaut

We try to sign good hockey players. Bad ones aren't as good. So it's important for us to tell which ones are good and which ones are bad. Then, when we've found the ones that are good, we try to get them to agree to be on our team and not other teams. Because to help our team do good, they need to be on our team. Sometimes they want to be on our team, sometimes they want to be on other teams. We try to convince them to want to be on our team by offering them money but not too much money because if you offer too much money because we can't spend all of our money. Me and Tommy and Jeff call that "Only Some of the Money" to remind each other not to spend all of the money.

I think your going about it the wrong way, what you need to do is to convince the bad players to sign on other teams for lots of money, because that too will help the team do good.

But that's kind of what I mean. Lamoriello would never say that signing Zaitsev was him not spending money wisely. Lamoriello just had a different, and often wrong, perspective on the right way to spend money.

I think sometimes GMs make decisions that they probably know aren't long term great but A) that's because they may not have long term strategy in mind when they make those moves and B) they still wouldn't say that it was a bad decision.

Not sure if posted, but quick Dubas interview just prior to the Mikheyev signing.

Boy, what are we going to talk about for the next 3 months?

Maybe how Keefe is going to survive benching Thornton for the season opener?

What should Marincin's 21/22 contract look like?

Yeah, big risk only signing him to a one year deal...I mean if he knocks it out of the park this season, Dubas will be forced to pay him...he might even get a 2 year deal!

8 years, $5M total. ;D (Seriously, though, I hope it's finally time we've seen the last of him on the NHL team)

He should be Marlies bound for sure. There's no way he should be in before Sandin.
