2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I don't want Getzlaf lol

You don't want a reliable two-way center for the 3rd line? He may not be the player he used to be, but he's still a responsible defensive presence with strong puck distribution skills.

I'd take him for a small contract. He can still play. He may go west since he's from Regina.

Is he actually two-way with responsible defense? His hockeyviz suggests decent offense still, but very porous defensively.

His possession stats tend to be positive (at least, relative to the quality of his team) and he's received Selke votes in a number of seasons (which, I know, is not the best gauge, but when a player gets votes for multiple seasons, it's usually at least an indication that he's defensively responsible).

I am very wary of Selke/Norris voting. It's usually sort by points, then check if he won last year and 'deserved it'. Surprisingly similar to the way DoPS is handled.

Getzlaf has fallen off the Selke wagon anyway.

Could he succeed in a 3rd line on the Leafs? Probably.
Can the Leafs do better at the projected price range given what the market is likely going to be? I think very much so.

Both are veteran playmaking centres on trash teams:

Other notes from their charts: Getzlaf | Thornton
Getzlaf had 1st line match ups, while Thornton faced middle-sixers. Team defense without Thornton is worse; team defense without Getzlaf is better, which all tracks with Quality of Competition.
Getzlaf PKd a bit, but he made things significantly worse.
Thornton helped the Sharks control shotshare consistently.

I can see the Leafs leaning towards a low-event style for bottom-six play.

Vets on cheap deals are fine but they're a band-aid, not a real solution. To really develop into the sort of team the Leafs should want to be those spots should be getting filled by young guys who can play above their role.

Thought this deserved a little more attention than being stuck in the ex leafs forum cos it made me smile wryly.

Kappy isn't a bad player but Willy I think is underrated in that he's a 30 goal scorer and a playmaker. I remember watching him and AM34 stick lift and just strip guys of pucks like taking candy from babies over and over. Kappy was a good player but they aren't on the same planet. Now if Willy could just be a bit better on D....

I certainly side with Stewart in terms of being sick to death of people posting heatmaps as some sort of "final word" as to a debate.

Heatmaps have definitely become a crutch for analytically focused people. They're useless, but they can't be the end-all and be-all. No stats, visualizations, etc., can be. They're support rather than gospel.

I feel bad now  :(

If you're going to dollars and cents it like a hot-take artist, I'd say good business now is if you're paying, you're paying for elite skill, game-breaker skill. Being able to make plays at high speed, stick-handling, passing, shooting, skating. Kap is fast with a good shot. But man, Willy can do all of these things at the same. Auston extra points in the shot metric. Mitch less shot but more in agility. Then there's offensive IQ, defensive IQ, work-ethic, durability, etc. but you can pick up a lot of those traits in lower-class guys. So many teams would love to spend their money on elite talent they've drafted. It's a great problem to have.

I went down a YouTube rabbit hole watching Leafs fans reactions to winning the lottery and signing Tavares. It brings back the feels.
