2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Leafs only have 5 picks in this years draft with the 3rd and 7th traded away. I'm not sold on this team anyway so what we going to mortgage now? A first for Bennett if that's what it's going to cost sorry Dubas stay away. Is he going to help that much? Put you over the top? Personally I don't think a forward is what we need. See how Galchenyuk does which I'm not expecting a lot if not get Robertson in the lineup. If anything address the D which I think could use some help. If not leave things as be and try and bolster this lineup next season. Andersen is off the books, give Hyman a slight raise and tinker with the lineup.

That 1st round pick is as good as gone.  It'll end up in the high 20's in a draft that is a complete crapshoot.  if there ever was a year to trade it, this is the year.

Yes I heard this draft sucks. What I'm saying is to bolster this lineup it's going to cost more than a 1st I think. Even Bennett for a 2nd isn't going to make a huge difference I don't think.

It's not so much that it sucks is just that with the OHL not running it's going to be hard to pick.. Agree though you don't give away picks on players that don't move the needle much and def don't mortgage the future unless it's a slam dunk.. I think it's going to be very hard to make a trade this season with the quarantine rules.

The only thing I'd like to see whether it's through a trade or some juggling personnel next year is bring in some guys that make this team harder to play against. Always said it team strikes no fear into anyone and I think teams take advantage of that. You seen that last game. Good players get hit with clean hits no complaints here but when teams take cheap shots at your players especially your stars and there is no push back you need to address that.

Just to take a different view, if it's a crapshoot, doesn't that mean you could potentially get a steal at a later slot?

Trade season is so fun. "Dubas personally scouts the Flames-sens game... must be trade related... has nothing to do with the fact the Leafs play there the next day".

Possibly, but the odds would still be against it. There's always guys who end up getting drafted later than they probably should have, but, even without much of a season this year, scouts can fairly readily put guys into the right tiers based on previous seasons. It's the order within those tiers that's going to be muddied. So, with later draft slots, you might be able to draft someone who probably should have gone a few slots higher (with that gap growing as you get deeper in the draft), but it's not likely you'll see a significant increase in the huge draft day steals compared to a normal year.

For sure, but the argument should be consistent. Basically, the reason people are saying it's a crapshoot is because they are going to have less accurate evaluations going into this draft and the players will have less development time.

The first part is true to an extent, but probably not in as significant a way as people argue it to be, as I covered in my previous post. The second part . . . that's a legit concern, but also not one we really know how it will actually impact these prospects - and it's almost certainly where we'll see the largest impact of the pandemic. The talent levels will be relatively accurately ordered. The NHL readiness/development timelines? Outside of the top players, that's could definitely be a crapshoot.

I think someone this morning was saying on the radio that they felt the Leafs were going after Johnny Gaudreau.  I really don't see that happening.
