2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Ok they almost got me with this one.

They should have started this tweet with "TRANSACTION:" to really rub it in.

I mean, if the prevailing wisdom from the Foligno thread seems to be that the Leafs have a real imperative to go all-in this year you'd almost hope that they use whatever cap room they have to the fullest and add a fairly meaningful upgrade somewhere.

I expect at least that. Possibly a couple other depth/taxi squad adds.

Dubas is in All in mode (as he should). Maybe he put a clain on Victor Mete (cheap, young, kind of decent) and he still has another 2.4mi to work with. Otherwise there was not much sense and make 2 trades with retaining salary because they would have the cap to take on Foligno and Rittich and be done with.

At least another move is coming for sure.

I think we're pretty set at forward, unless we're moving Kerfoot out in a deal (makes me wonder about a Kerfoot for Laughton swap). Goalies we're set now. So that leaves defence. This is the list of top pending UFA defencemen available via TSN's trade bait list:

Jamie Oleksiak
Alex Goligoski
Dmitry Kulikov
Michael Del Zotto
Ryan Murray
Erik Gudbranson
Ben Hutton
Marc Staal
Jordie Benn

Slim pickings there, and Oleksiak is rumoured to be going to Edmonton it seems.

Kulikov and Oleksiak are the only real interesting options if the team is looking to add someone to the regular lineup. There's a bunch of less heralded options out there for veteran 7/8 types, and the team might want to shore things up there.

Maybe. But I wonder if you maybe don't aim a little higher on defense and even try to land someone with some term.

Possibly, though, obviously, those are harder to identify and more complicated both in terms of the cap and the expansion draft. Looking at guys with 1 more year on their deals, there's a handful of interesting options from teams that are sellers - though, likely, with a higher cost for acquisition:

Seth Jones
Calvin De Haan
John Klingberg

I think they've probably placed a claim on Mete and are looking for someone with term as you say.

Failing that it'll probably be a 6/7 d for a similar pick.

Expansion draft-wise, if we're targeting someone with term, it has to be someone on or above the Muzzin/Brodie/Rielly tier for it to make sense (for Kerfoot + Dermott or something like that). I think the Leafs are loathe to subtract from the roster though, so I think this might be more of a depth rental, and I don't really care for any of the options on the board.

I think we're looking at someone like Biega, Hakanp??, or Pysyk.

I guess. But again, if you're super into going all guns a blazing for this year if the huge drawback to making a trade that markedly improves your defense this year is Seattle potentially deciding to pay Jake Muzzin's 33-35 year old seasons and free up some Leafs cap space going forward I don't know if it's quite the roadblock you make it sound like.

I think that's fair. It's a pretty short list of defensemen* that I'd toss one of Muzzin/Brodie/Rielly to the Expansion Draft for, and within the LTIR parameters at hand, and given who those players are and where their teams are in the standings, I don't see a fit that can be hammered out for the deadline. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, since hockey isn't my day job, but I'm not expecting anything too interesting by the end of the day.

* the list
Miro Heiskanen
Cale Makar
John Klingberg**
Colton Parayko
Rasmus Andersson
Brett Pesce

** if we get Klingberg, that'd be hilarious and amazing

*urge to acquire Oleksiak intensifying*

4 left for 2022. Better keep some to blow on rentals next season

THere's also the 2023 picks, some of the lower ceiling or older prospects, etc. We're not talking about expensive pieces here. Conditional picks where the conditions will never be met will be what teams give up for a number of these types.
