2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Honestly I would rather forego getting a 7th round pick to let Edmonton gain a small amount of cap advantage.  Unless Edmonton wants to go galaxy brain and give a much better asset for Hyman's rights I'd sooner just let them sign him to a stupid 5.5M contract.

Honestly, if they can turn that extra $500K into a meaningful difference on their barren roster, good for them. I'm quite happy for them to give the Leafs assets they should use to actually improve their roster.

I mean they'll probably just give that extra space to Mike Smith or something so who cares.

Don't care about the Oilers. Grab any asset you can. That is a horrible contract regardless of it being 7 or 8 years.

Word is they're signing him to a 2x2 contract.

Or use it to overpay someone else who won't move the needle much, like Edler or Zajac.

Absolutely this.

We'll get the real wording on this later, but the management group looked at the October draft and the projected uncertainty for this year's draft and basically pushed as much as possible into the October draft (more certainty). 15 picks over the two drafts is how they viewed it.

Yeah, Dubas really hasn't done a great job with this team in my opinion. Feels like the Quinn era Leafs again. Except at least those teams could win a round or two.
They got to the conference final twice. [emoji848]

Yeah I know. So it feels like the Quinn era, only worse.

I really have no idea how the two are comparable.

I'd like to see Dubas kick the tires on Getzlaf...his production fell off a cliff last year, but as a 4th line centre on a cheapie deal?

Good but not great teams who spend a lot of money, never win a Cup, and have no prospect base.

If he's willing to leave Anaheim/the Ducks don't want him back, I agree. He reportedly would prefer to stay put, but, who knows?

I think that gives us the same problem we had last year: 3 not bad but old/slow players who will either need to all play on a line together or one of them will need to play higher in the line-up than they should to keep them spread out.

I might have been interested in him if we didn't bring Simmonds back (assuming he also took $1mil or less, which might not be likely) but as things stand I wouldn't have much interest.

When you got Jared McCann at such a reasonable price, were you at all tempted to change your thinking and go 7-3-1?

Dubas: We thought about it. I would understand why you would look at it. It wasn?t just a case of going 7-3-1 because the cost was low. It was also, if we go 7-3-1, who would we be losing, and what would the cost be to replace that person at their current cap hit?

That would give us increased exposure on defense, and we knew what the market was shaping up to be in terms of free agents. I think that manifested itself a little bit last night. We also knew what the available players were and what we thought they were.

[...]

Can you expand on protecting Justin Holl over a couple of the forwards?

Dubas: The way we looked at it was ? what do we have in Justin, and what do we have for the future? He is signed for two more years. He has taken, in the last two seasons, major steps. I understand he is 29 years old, but he is extremely well-conditioned. There is very low mileage on him overall.

Holl and Muzzin together as a tandem, especially in the first three-quarters of the season, played against the other team?s best players. In our division, those were not a lot of easy nights if you go to Edmonton, Vancouver, we saw what Montreal did after they beat us, Calgary? every team in our division ? Winnipeg with their top line ? had very challenging players to defend against. Jake and Justin took that role on and performed very well in it.

Tavares has been cleared for all on-ice activity!

He?d be an upgrade on Thornton, that?s for sure.

I saw Gretzlaf play 6 years ago in Arizona against the Yotes. He was invisible. Only Maroon stood out and in a big way. I wanted him as a Leaf then. Still think he could help out on the lower lines.

Sure, on the one hand he's a cup champion with almost 1000 career points and a very good playoff record but on the other he was invisible one night six years ago against the Coyotes so...kind of a toss-up.

I mean....if you're going to lob up a ridiculous volleyball, that ball's getting spiked man.

Same with the comment about OEL in the other thread. A lone giveaway five years ago tarnishes your entire perception of a player? That's ludicrous.
