2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Speaking of the Zurich Lions, here's a scouting breakdown of one-time Zurich Lion, who now plays with an almost-Zurich Lion.

It definitely is frustrating seeing Mason Marchment at least have some depth usefulness for Florida. Malgin didn't really do anything.

As I recall it was a favor to Mason, wanted NHL opportunity and the Leafs didn't feel his skating was ready yet.

Marchment is a fringe NHLer at best.  There's no guarantee he sticks in the NHL, he's basically in a boat with hundreds of other players and the Leafs have a bunch of them already.

I still think Malgin could have been a fine depth NHLer but I obviously can't blame him for choosing to be an all-star in his home country instead.

As for Marchment, yeah I don't really think there's much to grumble about. He wouldn't have been on the team last year anyway and if Florida liked him enough they would have claimed him off waivers then.

As an aside, it's kind of funny to compare Marchment's season with Malgin's last season in the NHL. Malgin started off hot with 8 points in 9 games and then had just 4 in his next 27 with the Panthers before getting traded to the Leafs. Marchment had 6 points in his first 9 games and then had 0 goals and 4 assists in his next 24.

As one of Marchment's biggest boosters here when he was still a project: this is fine. Malgin was replacement level and basically helped the team tread water when mired in injuries. Would've been nice to see more pop, but he wasn't a net negative. In that same situation, Marchment would have been a liability. He is also older and was quite literally free.

So we upcycled a red paper clip into a stapler, falling well short of a jet ski (which was never going to be the proper expectation). No one is printing much on paper now, so staplers are not something worth spending on.

The process is fine and you just keep doing this until something happens to really fit the team at that time of need (see Trevor Moore --> Jack Campbell).

See, as I said many years ago, this is the basic problem with the Leafs: always looking to buy a jet ski, when what we really need is a furnace.

Jet Ski: Marner
Furnace: Hanafin

Is there anyone that actually prefers we got Hanifin?

But also, I'd like to interrogate the metaphor a bit, because it's a bit along the lines of sexy = luxury/useless, and in a game like hockey, that might be a misnomer. Elite playdrivers are the engine of any team's offense and when a team doesn't have a goal scoring engine, it's going no where fast.

And as someone who is not the biggest fan of Marner*, he is an elite playdriver.

* If we re-do 2015, trade down from 4 (especially if Marner doesn't drop past 3), get Barzal/Werenski/Chabot and Aho instead.

This time of year is so tough. I need the dopamine I get from reading daily articles filled with leafs scores and statistics. The withdrawal period is so difficult?
