2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Muzzin Holl isn?t working right now.  They are both really struggling.

Holl likely played a game or two under the weather, and Muzzin's probably dealing with something too considering he was given a maintenance day earlier in the week. Hopefully that explains some of that.

Yeah there are definitely reasons although I think I did see a stat that suggested that over the last year that Muzzin's numbers are better away from Holl than with him by a decent margin (sample size apart is pretty limited though)

His one assist was a secondary when he was on the bench (thanks, Willy)

Some people have been super hard on his start and the points aren't there and admittedly sure he isn't playing at his absolute best, but I still think he could have pretty easily had goals in each of his first 3 games if some bounces went just a tiny bit more his way. The 4th game was a little different because that was all Matthews but if Auston finished on one of his chances he could have had additional points there. So all in all I don't think there's much to worry about with Marner right now.

I think we should hit the panic button.

Hit the panic button? C'mon, man. You gotta mash that baby hard and repeatedly.

4 games into the season TO has had 6 non OT goals against, I don't think d is an issue, in those 4 games TO has only scored 8 goals, that's the issue.

I think you're looking purely at the goals for and against and overlooking that in games 2 and 4, the Leafs dominated teams (most definitely in the 4th game) and were stymied by exceptional goaltending. On the other hand, the Leafs weren't very good in the first game of the season defensively and Campbell stonewalled the other team. Sure the Leafs have to put up more goals. But to say the defense is solid and the offence is a problem is a tad premature.

Expected goals for doesn't always translate to actual production but the Leafs have an xGF of 15.48. The flip side is their expected goals against is 12.05 so that one extra goal over their 8 vs. 6 actual goals really doesn't make their 2-1-1 record really all that unreasonable.

The Leafs have relied on Campbell (and 2nd period Mrazek) to make a lot of difficult saves as well.

It?s hard to draw hard conclusions from the first 10 games of the season, maybe especially this one, because players are still in preseason mode. The only things I?m willing to conclude so far: Nylander is amazing, Ritchie sucks, and Montreal will miss the playoffs.

Agreed.

Though I thought Ritchie had a $3.5M contract. Now that I see it's $2.5M, I'm more OK. As long as he doesn't actively lose games for us or stymie Matthews (is that possible?), I'm a big "meh." He can be moved to the 3rd or 4th lines.

I think we need to go a little easy on Ritchie.  That line killed it against the Rangers, and Matthews wouldn't let anyone else shoot the puck.

All Ritchie needs to learn how to do is to make sure Marner and Matthews have the puck, and I think that happened well enough in his first real game playing with them.

I broke my panic button in 1990-91.  It's in the permanent on position.  That's my secret.  I'm always panicking.

Wtf

Edit: this was to facilitate (or correct?) his Halloween costume. The team had a party earlier in the week and the costumes were food themed. Brodie went as the king of Flavortown, Guy Fieri.

So how does that make sense? The Leafs think a 6 pm start will help them out so the NHL schedules a game early for them?

That doesn't pass the sniff test.
