2021-22 Training Camp Thread

Here's what Spezza does when he's not faking goalies out of their jocks:

Stealing every single idea from Tampa, nice

Preseason: aka, that time of year where we pray our bonafide NHLer's don't get concussed by a borderline enforcer desperately trying to "tough" his way onto a team.

I fully expect Matthews to be ready to go for game 1 and score 2 goals in the opener.  These young guys seem to heal a lot quicker than old farts like us.

Looks like Rielly gets the first chance on PP1.

I'm not shocked by Rielly getting the first chance to QB the Powerplay. No one has jumped up and taken it from him so it's his to lose.

Leafs practicing with their likely PP1 and PP2 units to start the season today:

Tavares
Nylander-Marner-Matthews
Rielly

Simmonds
Kase-Bunting-Spezza
Sandin

Not super surprising but I was curious to see what would happen with Simmonds and Ritchie when it was announced Tavares was taking the net front spot on PP1. Simmonds likely gets the first call for the PP2 spot and Ritchie is left off the unit altogether.

Off the camp roster today: Gogolev, Kral.
Teemu Kivihalme pre-emptively passed through waivers but hasn't been sent down yet.
Curtis Douglas and Rich Clune sent to Marlies, while freshly signed William Villeneuve has been loaned back to Saint John Ice Dogs.

Obvious Marlies cuts will take place either late Tuesday or Wednesday, following the back-to-back Mon/Tues preseason tune ups.

Anyone with predictions on any surprises?

Either of Robertson or Ho-Sang making the roster? (I suspect both on Marlies to start)

I don't think there's much room for surprises. Robertson is 100% going to the Marlies at this point, ditto for Ho-Sang (assuming he signs which doesn't seem like an issue). Gusev doesn't seem to have impressed much at camp so he'll probably be let go. Based off the practice sessions the top-9 forwards are basically set at:

Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Mikheyev-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Kampf-Kase

I guess it's a bit of a surprise to not see Bunting in that group considering he started with Tavares, but if Mikheyev doesn't capitalize on that opportunity I'm sure he'll be the next guy up there. 4th line hasn't seen any time together at camp but it's hard to not see it be Bunting-Spezza-Simmonds. Defence is pretty much set as well. So the only question mark at this point is which player the Leafs keep up as the 13th forward or 7th defenceman.

He doesn't seem to be on the GD roster card, but I'm pulling for Liljegren to make the team and not just be the yoyo this season due to his non-waivers contract.

But I think both your guys are Marlies for sure, and prob Liljegren too.

Ya, they'd have to really steal the job, and they haven't.

I'm assuming Engvall has the leg-up on the 13th spot (or possibly Brooks.)
