Anderson seems to have made no impression, again.  So are we ready to declare that we got back essentially zip for Mango?

Mango scored 11 points in 50 games last season at $3.4m on the cap...I think the Leafs make that trade again all day long.

That's with the Devils.  I don't buy for a minute that Dubas could not have done better.

He was also coming back from an injury that cost him half a season, and had mediocre production before that. At $3.4M on the cap for 3 more seasons in a flat cap world, I don't think anyone was busting down Dubas' door to trade for him. If he doesn't bounce back (which, last season, he did not), that's a bad contract to take on. Teams aren't giving up good assets for that.

Did some producer or director get fired from TSN or something?

No. There's no room for him on this team, he plays RW, currently so I get the feeling they didn't play him much as a strategy to get him to clear waivers. I think he gets called up at some point as an injury replacement.

Truly no offense meant busta, but I can't tell you how many times over the years we trade or otherwise get rid of a decent or even good player, who was valued by us fans when he was a Leaf, for little or nothing in return.  Then, after the fact, we hear all kinds of reasons why he wasn't any good or was on the decline or overpriced or whatever so we ought to just accept, or even praise, the transaction.  Or, "GM ______ couldn't have done any better" ? which is just an empty answer IMO.

Like I said, I'm not buying it.

I look at this trade this way: he was a top 6 forward for us, and we got nothing in return, in essence.  Maybe GT is right and he'll get called up.  Maybe I'll be proven wrong.  But I doubt it.

It's not an empty answer if reasons are given as to why we feel that way. I would compare the deal to other deals to open up cap space that were being made around the league. Other teams were trading better players than Johnsson for poor returns.

I look at the marketplace at the time and evalulate the deal based on that. Bona fide top 4 dman Nate Schmidt got a 2nd, Ryan Murray coming off a an injury plagued year got a 5th, Stastny got and depth D and a 4th. I don't think that suggests a marketplace where Johnsson was worth any more than he was traded for. I would say all of those players have a better track record and were more proven than Johnsson and got very little in return as well.

Keeping him just wasn't an option (and in hindsight would have been a disaster), and he was was moved in a deal comparable to deals for cap space around the league. I'd say you inflated his value in your head and are upset that the return didn't match that value. I don't think Johnsson was ever a top 6 forward here, in his only full-ish season he was 10th in average time on ice for forwards.

If anything, "I'm not buying it" is an empty answer when there are valid points about his value being brought up.

This is kind of a weird thing to be revisionist about when the Johnsson/Anderson trade thread is here on the board and we can read that everybody, at the time, acknowledged that Anderson was a very middling prospect and the move was a salary dump. ZBBM even agreed with me when I said that the reason Johnsson probably got dealt for as little as he did is that other teams probably didn't want him.

When it comes to trades like this it would be shocking to me with that many bodies in the room with Dubas that they'd let him make a trade that was significantly lower than market value. I really don't think it's likely that he or they as a group didn't do their due diligence.

I'd like to have trades more lopsided for the Leafs as well but not winning a trade and then saying Dubas basically isn't doing his job is a huge leap imo.

If Dubas had valiantly held out for a 4th or 5th round draft pick on Johnsson then we wouldn't have had the cap space to sign Bogosian, Mikheyev, and Dermott. Clearing $3.4mil in cap space isn't getting "nothing" in return in a cap world, especially a flat cap world.

We got cap space back.  Cap space that last year signed Mikheyev, Bogosian and one of Thornton/Spezza/Dermott.

He was traded coming off an 8 goal in 43 game season with a cap hit of 3.6M going into a flat cap.  He was never going to have good trade value.

Maybe there is a slightly better asset than Anderson, who I agree is not anything special, but the value of the return was the cap flexibility.  Just because he played some time in the top 6 doesn't make him a top 6 forward.

Sounds like Nylander isn't on the the Muskoka retreat because of his vaccination status.  He's less than 2 weeks complete since his second shot.  He wouldn't be able to be at Gravenhurst without double vaccination + 14 days.

Yep...CJ says he'll be good to go just before season opener.

Mennel, Seney and Anderson all clear waivers.  That's a good sign for a strong Marlies team this year.

I was mildly concerned that Mennell might get claimed. Happy to see he wasn't. Could be a good pick up for the organization.

He looked real good against the Canadians in the last game.  Happy to have him.

It will be nice to have a TJ Brennan like player back on the blueline for the Marlies.  Mennell is a better defensive player than Brennan but he will be a big boost to the offense on that blueline (they need the help there).  I wouldn't be against him being a guy that gets a potential injury callup at some point if the Leafs are looking to replace offense.

The Leafs have been working on building up the D prospects and Marlies.  I think we have some very good callups available starting with Lilly.
