Kapanen and Johnsson both on waivers and potentially finding themselves back in the AHL... don't think anybody would have expected that a few years ago.

Andreas Johnsson AHL 35GP 9-18-27

I didn't think so of Johnsson but I kind of thought that of Kapanen. I just don't think he'll ever reach the level of maturity needed to be an NHL regular.

It's kind of remarkable how both Johnsson and Kapanen went into the crapper after the Leafs traded them.  Ok with Johnsson he was a 7th round pick and maybe didn't have the talent for long term success, but Kapanen with the crazy speed you would think he'd be able to be a solid contributor.  Leafs dealt those 2 at the right time.

And honestly I really thought our wing depth was going to be pretty bad without them but in reality they would've been boat anchors.

I always felt Kapanen was a little overrated because of his speed. He was incredibly fast in a straight line, sure, and has a good shot, but, outside of that? He very much was lacking in vision, creativity, etc. Always left me wanting more.

He'd be a good 3rd-4th line/PK guy making around 1-1.5M would be useful. He's got 20 points in 43 games this season. He's just not a top 6 guy worthy of 3.2M. I'd be tempted at half retention for a late rounder. He produces more then Engvall, Kerfoot.

Blazers who rely on their speed at lower levels but who can't translate that to offense at the NHL level actually seems like a pretty common tale. Feels like speed and size are the two things that will get pretty "meh" prospects taken in the later bits of the first round.

Yup. At lower levels, it definitely separates them from the pack and often masks other deficiencies - especially when that speed or size is high end even for the NHL. And, when you start to get to near the end of the 1st round, you?re often looking at guys that have one or two high end skills but not much else. Teams just have to hope these guys have the hockey sense to adapt to a role at the NHL level, but many just don?t.

Is it bad that I wouldn't hate if the Leafs made a claim for Kapanen...

I'm sure once he tears it up as a Leaf to finish the season Dubas will be able to find him a home next season. :)

3.2M is way too much to take on.

1/2 retention? Probably still too much, but getting to the "interesting" category. Everyone likes a comeback story.

I think Carolina might claim him if it doesn?t impact their ability to swing for Meier. Their playstyle suits Kapanen?s strengths and mitigates his weakness (spam attack)

Half retention for sure.
