2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Mini Whitney just felt over rehearsed, good set of pipes but my preference for an anthem is more of the classic arena anthem style. We need a Rene Rancourt of our own

I can't believe you actually want a Rene Rancourt type singer. That guy was super annoying

Well, I liked her.  For one thing, she can actually sing.  Yeah, the escalated ending got a bit stale, but she was super-consistent and not cloying.  I wouldn't mind an instrumental, or you know, just skip the damn anthems from now on.

The one benefit of living in a divided, post conflict society is we don?t have to endure anthems pre game. Just get straight started into it. It?s so much better.

Seriously. He was the worst.

I never cared for her version of the anthem. I know a lot of you liked her version, but I hated the way she did the last few bars.

Couldn't stand it myself. This isn't American Idol, you're just singing to a hockey crowd. No need to do a key change at the end of a national anthem just to show us how well you can sing. We get it.

On the same note, are the Leafs ever going to change that annoying Hall and Oates song every time a goal is scored?

Who decided on that and why has it been going on for like 4 years now? Hell, I've heard Start Me Up from the Stones too many times in my life but I'd prefer that every time the Leafs scored to Make My Dreams Come True. In fact, Mick Jagger immediately saying, "if you start me up, if you start me up, I'll never stop," would be a lot more effective for the whole team and fans than, "you make my dreams come true....ooo ooo ooo ooo"

This is very sweet.

Key question: is Liljegren standing on a box, or is this just a very fish-eye lens

Don't want to pile on.

Yes, I do.  That guy doesn't even qualify as a singer.

I do like the postgame thing from I forgot her name.

Jiminy I love Rasmus but he looks like Runtmus there.

Wait ... William Nylander can speak Swedish???

I don't think I ever heard Mats speak it, BTW.

I have to say how much Malgin impressed this camp, looks like a different player altogether, that one rush where he shovelled the pass ahead to himself and bury his shot was incredible.

Only 12 forwards on the roster. I find it impossible to believe none of them will be injured more than 1 game. Matthews, Kampf, Tavares, Nylander, Kerfoot & Jarnkrok are all capable of playing center so an injury to the top 12 can always be covered by a winger. Marner is good at faceoffs. Engvall & Malgin have played center too but are not as good at the faceoffs. Lots of options.  We'll see Robertson then.

Malgin is on the hot seat. He can't let up much with Robertson just down the road. So Robertson will probably have a positive effect on the Leafs results while playing in Coca-Cola Coliseum ... If Malgin cannot contribute this season with Tavares and a very hot Nylander on his line, well to quote Charles S. Dutton in Rudy "it ain't gonna never happen" I suspect he'll be fine out the gate. The question will be whether he can keep it up through a rigorous, physically challenging 82 games.

With a 20 man roster, the only safety net is going on the IR and being down a man for a game.

Eh since the season starts tonight, and I recall there was some consternation in the first week of free agency, how do y?all feel about this past off-season now?

I mean under the circumstances I think Dubas continues to do a great job finding ways to tinker with the lineup without making the team worse.

Jarnkrok was a good addition.  Zach Aston Reese adds a level of toughness that we lack.  NAK is a good defensive replacement for what we lost with Mikheyev.  So some good changes.

We still need to see what happens with Engvall, LTIR and Holl/Kerfoot.

Murray/Samsonov have looked fine in preseason but they are going to be more of an evaluation over the next few months.

This was my "armchair" GM roster that I proposed back in May, versus the opening night line-up tonight:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Domi-Tavares-Kase
Robertson-Paul-Nylander
ZAR-Kampf-Engvall
Simmonds

Rielly-Mayfield
Giordano-Brodie
Sandin-Liljegren
Dahlstrom

Varlamov
Mrazek
        Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Malgin
Engvall-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok
ZAR-Kampf-NAK

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Giordano-Sandin
IR: Liljegren

Murray
Samsonov

My big move, Muzzin and Holl for Varlamov (at 50% retained) and Mayfield obviously didn't happen, but that was of course fairly unlikely anyway.

We're still at the end of the day taking a swing on 2 goalies. My duo would have came in at a $6.3mil AAV. This duo comes in at just under $6.5mil.

We're keeping the D the same, which I am fine with because I think it has the makings for a very solid group. Not moving Muzzin could end up back-firing, but for all we know his NTC came into play in that decision. Hopefully he stays healthy and performs up to expectations. Regardless of that though they'll need to have a serious conversation about moving him next offseason when his NTC is less restrictive and his salary drops to $2mil. That could open up the space required to keep someone like Bunting.

At forward we didn't get all the guys I wanted there, or my later obsession of Dylan Strome. Getting ZAR signed is a big win though, as is assembling the forwards so the checking unit shifts to L4. The idea behind that though was to get more scoring out of L3, and while I do like that trio of utility players individually I worry the line is lacking a bit of an offensive punch. Maybe once a cap move becomes necessary Robertson replaces Engvall there to accomplish that.

Dubas's offseason, and maybe his career, ride on the two goalies.  It's a huge gamble and the biggest obstacle to the team finally breaking through in the playoffs.  His handling of the goalie situation is arguably his biggest weakness.

In what sense? Its hard to fathom what could actually have been done with Freddy just not getting it done here and Jack wanting an exorbitant contract after a great November but an otherwise terrible year. I was on board with Mrazek until he crapped the bed.

I'm not defending Murray/Samsonov as they're both gambles but I mean people are talking about paying Husso like it's a sure bet after he imploded in the playoffs.

This was a terrible summer to need a goalie. Everyone available was either had a limited track record, questionable reliability, or were looking for contracts that take them well into their late 30s.

Come to think of it, the goalie market the last few years hasn't exactly been great. Other than Markstrom and Kuemper, I'm not sure there's a goalie that's changed teams recently that felt like a clear upgrade on the moves the Leafs made.
