2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

https://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod/status/1675614671678627848

Seems unlikely, but this could still be possible depending on cap hits for Domi and Samsonov if the Leafs deal Timmins and run a 20-man roster only. Which of course they have lots of experience doing.

Also, what's the deal with everyone comparing Klingberg to Gustafsson? I have a hard time believing they aren't both valued properly, or is Klingberg relying on prior Stars recognition?

Gustafsson has pretty much always been a bottom pair guy who can absolutely take advantage of the right situations, like when he ate up PP time on Chicago (Kane) and Washington (Ovi). Klingberg's struggled the last season, maybe last 2 seasons, but prior to that he was a pretty legitimate top-4 defenceman. Maybe even top-3 guy at his peak.

Unless they find a way to ship Murray out.

Nope, that's including moving Murray already. As things stand right now he needs to be traded or bought out just to get room for Samsonov to sign.

So far:

J?rnkrok-Matthews-Nylander
Bertuzzi-Tavares-Marner
Knies-K?mpf-Lafferty
____-Holmberg-Reaves

Maybes: McMann, Robertson

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Klingberg
Giordano-Liljegren
Timmins

Murray (bye)
Woll

RFA: Samsonov

LTIR: Muzzin

Top-6 LW answered for now. Shutdown RD still a question mark but I don?t see any UFA answers. Brodie has lost a step so the quickness required to be off-hand will be rough in shutdown situations. Maybe Liljegren gets a run:

Rielly-McCabe
Brodie-Liljegren
Giordano-Klingberg

McCabe being off-hand: other than Rielly, he?s probably the best skater on the blueline. Setting him in safety mode probably helps mitigate his decision-making difficulties ? default to boring and let Rielly cook those sheltered minutes.

If they can him at 2.5M and Samsonov at 3.5M, I think they can squeeze a 21 man roster in.

Domi at 2.5 for a year is great.  We keep pushing the roster holes a year down the road with all these short signings but the potential would be really good

Next year?s UFA class has potential to be a really deep one, too.

Looks like there will be a London Knights line

I.e. it would behoove the Leafs to play Marner away from Matthews when he is vying for a contract year.

What does his contract status have to do with it? They should play Marner and Matthews where it'll help the most at winning hockey games.

Cap/roster breakdown now:

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Marner
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Nylander
Knies-Domi-Lafferty
McMann-Kampf-Reaves

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljgren
Giordano-Klingberg
Timmins

Woll
Murray

That roster is $1,597,283 over the cap and doesn't have Samsonov signed. Murray bought out leaves $2.4mil in cap space for Samsonov. Traded with zero retention or money coming back and the cap space jumps up to $3,090,217. The Leafs could basically sign him to that exact amount if they plan on using this roster opening day in order to fully maximize Muzzin's LTIR status.

Still wouldn't be shocked to see a trade to change up the defence group at some point in the offseason, but hey Treliving did a pretty good job with the forwards even if I'm still not psyched about the prices he paid for his first 2 signings. And while I like the look of the forward group as I wrote them out, I'm still sorta expecting Keefe to use Kampf at 3C and Domi on the wing which knocks it down a grade for me.

I thought you were going to yell at me for using behoove again.

Marner doesn?t need any more fuel to ask for 14M+ which he would likely do if he got to roll with Matthews again all regular season for 22min a night. He is more useful on a different line (Tavares?).

Marner getting iso?d in the playoffs is why Matthews seems relatively nerfed at the same time. A legit shooting threat with Matthews gives him more space.

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Nylander
Domi-Tavares-Marner
Jarnkrok-Kampf-Lafferty
Knies-Holmberg-Reaves

Puts a shooter and a faasthole on every line. Knies will get first crack in the top six when someone gets suspended. I would also consider swapping Lafferty and Knies and shifting Holmberg to wing in that case.

I think the forwards have shaken out pretty well, although I worry about 3C.  I think it's clear why O'Reilly didn't sign: he was after a multi-year deal and the Leafs, justifiably, are primarily interested in shorter term deals this off-season.  Still, though, I would have loved to have O'Reilly penciled in at 3C with this group of forwards.

I do hope there is a move or two remaining on defence. I'm not comfortable with relying on Giordano to the extent they did last year.  There is literally no depth, at least not yet.  I agree with some of the suggestions around trading Brodie and bringing in two 4-5 D's who bring defensive ability and toughness to the table.  I think not signing Schenn was a mistake.

Yeah. I actually like this team a bit better than if they'd just run things back. Losing Schenn is maybe a bit of a bummer but other than that I'm pretty excited to see what this team looks like. With Domi, Jarnkrok and Knies up full time it feels like there's a lot of mix and match capabilities to come up with some pretty solid depth.

Schenn is old and had a long contract that he wasn't worth because he played in Toronto. Would've been nice to keep him but def not at what he got.

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Jarnkrok
Domi-Tavares-Marner
Knies-Kampf-Nylander
Lafferty-Holmberg-Reaves

Or

Knies-Matthews-Jarnkrok
Domi-Tavares-Marner
Bertuzzi-Kampf-Nylander
Lafferty-Holmberg-Reaves

and "Load Up Line"

Nylander-Matthews-Marner
Bertuzzi-Tavares-Domi
Knies-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Lafferty-Holmberg-Reaves

I wouldn't run these lines out depending on game situation, I'd just mix them up as the game goes.

I'd say after a questionable first day of free agency Treliving rebounded nicely. There's something to look forward to now.
