Lets stop treating Hildeby like he is a glass to be broken.  If you read about the guy, he is a cool as a cucumber.  Plays a similar style to Woll, squares up, great glove and athletic when he needs to be.

Just hope that Toskala can fit Samsonov into his goalie training camp in Helsinki. Class 101,  "How to stop a beach ball.
Don't know who you're referring to but I've seen him play plenty. I'm a big fan and think he can be part of the future. I'm not opposed to bringing him up to play.I'm opposed to him coming up to be a backup and sit on the bench like Petruzzelli last year. The good thing is there's a B2B situation so there should be at least 1 start in this 3 game trip.

Hildeby played yesterday in an overtime loss, but not on him it seems.  So he is fresh. Lets give him a start and hopefully the team shows up in the same way the seem to do for Woll.  With Gio back, the D should round into some kind of form (we would hope)

They have to make some personnel decisions.
Getting a look at Hildeby facing NHL shooters might be helpful.

Was at the game. 1st goal was Sammy like. Not much he could do on the others. He's solid and made some beauty saves. Very sound calm. He reminds me of Woll, just a little bigger. I just hope if they call him up they play him. He can't sit on the bench.

A conditioning stint would have put the Leafs in a tough spot in terms of roster and cap space with no real benefit vs waivers, and I'm not even sure the league would have looked at it approvingly. Him going on waivers has been inevitable for a little while now.

Woll is eligible for LTIR as of today. There's your (edit) cap space.
Reaves is eligible for LTIR as of Jan 6th - if Woll is close to returning.
Holmberg could go down for a game or so if needed.
AHL conditioning is max 14 days.
So they didn't "have" to waive him for roster and cap space reasons at this particular moment.

If Edmonton or someone picks him up and Jones gets hurt ... how's U of T goaltending this year? Because aside from Hildeby, there's not a lot of impressive depth at this juncture.

Granted that it was inevitable because when Woll returns one of Jones or Samsonov would probably have to go on waivers. In saying that, I presume Jones emergency call up doesn't cover for him any more. As I mentioned before, Jones is more likely to be picked up off waivers. Canes could snatch him to replace Raanta - maybe the only NHL goalie statistically worse than Samsonov for example - no brainer.

Do we really think someone picks up Sammy? Because I really don't. Not for that cap hit. There's 0 incentive.

Doubtful. However, he's only 26. It's not like serious arthritis or old age set in.
A bunch of his numbers are due to the terrible defensive play in front of him.
Hurricanes could move Andersen to LTIR to get cap space and give him a try.

Samsonov put up good numbers behind a team who was pretty good defensively last season.
Canes seem better than the Leafs defensively last year and this.
He probably can't return to last seasons .919 save% but he might bounce back to north of .900
How that fits into their plans I'm not sure.

Doubtful but seeing its only for this year there maybe a team that takes a chance on him. Worst thing that can happen is they lose 2.4M give or take in cap space if putting him back on waivers and nobody claims him.

Yeah if it was a multi year deal nobody touches him with a 10 foot poll like Campbell.  With only basically half a year left if you think you have the goalie coach that could "unlock" him maybe you take a chance.

For the record though I don't think anyone claims him

Woll going on LTIR adds less than the league minimum to the team?s cap space. Not enough for the leafs to add a second goalie without another move. Samsonov on waivers is the best option both in terms of cap and logistics.

He?s also in his first season in North America. Don?t need to treat him with kid?s gloves, but you also don?t want to just throw him to the wolves, either.

In the 17 regular season games he has played for the Marlies, Hildeby has not played against the Chicago Wolves or the Hartford Wolf Pack.

No herman. Bad herman.

Dennis Hildeby is 6?7?, Noah Gregor is 6?0?

Why don't more goalies simply look over the screen.

To the surprise of what should be nobody, Samsonov cleared waivers.

I had the same hope as when I buy a lottery ticket. "I mean the chances are slightly better than 0! I'll take that!"

They're on the southwest coast this week, so I figure Hildeby gets a start way out there away from anyone that cares about hockey.

Excuse me ... there are 10 and 10s of people out there who care.

Personally, I would flip the script and start him all three games. He might as well impose his Towering Will on the league from the get-go.  No sense delaying the inevitable.

Shit.

In all seriousness, this is good news.  The chances of getting him unlocked are way higher than Hildeby/Jones being a long-term success filling that spot this season, or finding somebody else.
