2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

He?s exceptionally fun to watch? but of ?the four? he?d probably be the one I?d be least upset to lose for whatever reason.

For a more scientific assessment, ZBBM's MOTM totals only 17 points for Mr. Marner.

He hasn't been great in the first half...good, sure, but not great.

He's on pace for 88 points, which is you know pretty good, but also his worst points pace since his sophomore NHL season in 17/18. Possibly made more notable with the rise in scoring right now.

This reads like he?s just playing as a defenseman.

That's how I feel about Marner too. Funny thing though, with him being a Toronto boy - I'm sure winning a Cup here would mean more to Marner than Nylander or Matthews. Would be ironic if they had to trade him away (or let him walk) in order to actually put the final pieces in place.

His NMC kicked in this season so we can?t DeRozan him unless he walks UFA (which is a huge setback, asset-wise).

Everybody ready (to celebrate)?

It?s a good thing I don?t go on Twitter anymore because I can only imagine the comments going on there.

Technicalities! LOL.

MotM is very much science-driven, thanks for picking up on that, Frank.

No rebounds because the puck goes in the net
And no DZ puck touches because he?s already blown the zone 8)

Tavares at league minimum seems like a huge stretch.  Hometown discount, sure.  But I don't see him falling off a cliff like Spezza did in his 34 and 35 years to have to scrounge for that type of deal.

Anything between $5 and $7 million and I'll be happy.  He's been a good soldier for the team, he's been more than fine as captain, and he's an overall good guy.

I like the fact that most of the conversation revolves around him coming back, than hoping to see him ride out his contract and say sayonara.  I think there will definitely be a role and room on the team for him.  But as we all agree, certainly nowhere close to what he is getting now.

Agreed. Tavares is being seriously undervalued here. Of course we need to see what happens over the next 1.5 years, but think more Patrick Marleau and less Spezza.

There's obviously absolutely no chance whatsoever Jones keeps being this good for the remainder of the season, but if he can be kinda good that'd be huge.

I think for the most part people aren't exactly undervaluing him, it's more of a wish that he takes a super-duper discount on his next deal as opposed to just a super one.

The defense provided by the Leafs skaters during the recent three game western road trip ... that wasn't the same quality of defense we saw throughout much of the previous games this season. It proved they are more capable of team defense than they provided - particularly Samsonov though they had some stinkers in front of Woll.

After Tuesday's game against San Jose, they face tougher competition so there is likely to be a 'correction' in Jones gaudy numbers.

I was reflecting on great goalies like Roy, Hasek, Joseph, Belfour, Sawchuk, etc - a number of them were pretty high strung and they were kind of on edge.  At the same time, they had some or a lot of confidence. Jones seems a bit of a contradiction of that. He is so outwardly calm and laid back - even in goal during the game. I haven't seen him rattled. Probably a good thing behind a team like this. If Samsonov could find a way to get calmer like that, he'd probably benefit.

It took Liljegren about 2 weeks from his first on-ice appearance at practice since his injury to actually getting into a game, so that's probably roughly what to expect (at minimum) from Woll as well.

I think he?s out until just after the All Star game. Gives him a little extra time, and doesn?t have him get back in games just to shut things down again right away. There?s just over two and a half weeks until the break any way.

With 2 points there last night Marner has rather quietly taken over the 5-on-5 scoring lead on the team.

He also, and I don't think anybody would have guessed this, has more 5-on-5 goals than Nylander right now (well, 1 more 5-on-5 goal).

The timeline fits with what I was expecting.  He'll be ready to play at the end of January but I agree with keeping him out until after the ASB.

Hildeby has been with the team for a week.  The Leafs have 9 games left including a back to back with Colorado/Detroit (both at home), Vancouver/Seattle (on the road).  He probably deserves a game or two for being with the team.  Detroit and Seattle are probably not unreasonable games to give him.

@Islanders, Colorado, Detroit, @Edmonton, @Calgary, @Vancouver, @Seattle, Winnipeg, @Winnipeg

It's a tough stretch of games but with the way Jones is playing right now (and to be honest the way the Leafs have played in front of him) I don't see the reason to rush him back.
