2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

So with Laughton (50% retained), Carlo (15% retained), Timmins and Dewar dealt, Reaves assigned to the Marlies, and Pacioretty placed on LTIR the Leafs have a 22-man roster with about $200k in cap space.

I haven't really seen it mentioned yet but it's likely that Pacioretty (and of course Hakanpaa) are now done for the season. Unless someone else goes on LTIR there just won't be any room to activate either of them. Pacioretty earned a $313,115 bonus (and therefore cap hit against the Leafs) by playing an extra 3 games this season.

Patches could and probably will pop up again in playoffs. Very much doubt Hakanpaa will.

I would like to see a cap hit, playoffs point per game stat average over the past 8 years. I would imagine Toronto’s value would be atrocious.

Of course awaiting specific details, but I like the adds and the reasonable - ish costs associated.

Nice job Tre. Now it's certainly on the players.

Who?

26 yr old 6’1” RH centre, RFA this offseason. I don’t think he makes the cutoff time for either Leafs playoffs or Marlies playoffs. Marlies need a centre for the regular season anyway.
AHL trade deadline is the 14th. And since Johnson was already playing in the AHL, he’s good for the playoffs.

Also, could definitely had been agreed to before the deadline and not reported until now, considering how minor a move it is.

I think they’ve done a decent job.

I actually think hanging onto Robertson and Domi while having a much better 3c option will allow them to both be better deployed. Hopefully this particularly applies to Domi who I think could still be a positive asset in the right role.

Robertson has shown enough recently I think to deserve a little more runway.

Both those players having a player down the middle with a defensive conscience should help both of them. Domi is a bit of a head case when it comes to managing the puck so I'm not as sure with him but Robertson has been making a concerted effort all season to improve his two way game - and he has improved. Now that line has a shooter, a passer and some defensive improvement down the middle. On paper, it should be improved - both ways. Of course, Jarnkrok who is decent both ways may factor in ..

Reactions: Arn
The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.
Toronto expressed interest in getting down to business on a contract extension in recent months, but the Marner camp was unwilling to engage during the season, according to league sources.

"The Leafs approached Marner before the deadline and told him that their first choice was for him to sign an extension in Toronto but that a trade to Carolina was possible if he didn’t want to do that. Marner said he wanted to remain with the Leafs."
That's all that needs to be said. Leafs explored it, did their due diligence by asking and that's it.
