That is the low end of what some thought he would get in an arbitration deal for 1 year.
The high side was $4 mil for 2 years.

I wonder if they'll turn around and trade him ..

That?s obviously heavily dependent on what happens over the next few day/weeks.

The OEL interest feels very out of no where. Likely gets overpaid based off the playoff run. Not big in terms of weight or even height. Secondary PK guy at best. Not a noted blocker or hitter. And a left handed shot who has maybe spent some time on the right in his career but still probably at his best on the right.

Maybe it makes sense if they want to keep Benoit and McCabe together and then have OEL-Liljegren as a 3rd pair, but I dunno that seems kinda meh.

And if they are looking for a Swedish, two-way, left handed, 4/5 defenceman I'd prefer Kylington.

Curious. When has a team sunbed a guy and then trade him soon after? Leafs can move Jarnkrok and Kampf Alyn with Timmins should the need arise.

I wonder if the lack of 'rumblings' among the top 4 UFA dmen was a factor ...

If they sign Tanev by noon Jul 1, they will have six NHL dmen signed so they don't have to do anything desperate.

If they sign these four to these salaries:
Robertson $1.35
Dewar $1.2
Tanev $4
Brossoit $2.2 (per AKP)

They only have $4.4 mil in cap space left.
Something else has to happen to get Zadorov or a top 4 RH Dman at $5.5

Bring him home!

I didn't mind Joey for the Marlies.
He had a little flash when he arrived in Chicago but quickly flickered out.

The first one that comes to mind for me was the sens sending Hossa to Atlanta shortly after signing him. It?s not common, but it happens.

I don?t want OEL at all

It makes me wonder how Klingberg's surgery turned out if they're looking at something like that.
They could get him on NHL minimum with bonuses. There's your right handed puck mover/PP guy.
The Leafs doctors would know as well as anyone what his prognosis for playing is.

What leverage does he have?

No arb rights, has 87 career games to his name...

Refusing to sign is the only leverage he has. He?s struggled to stay healthy and is only useful on one side of the puck. Not convinced he?ll be a big loss. Send him to New Jersey so Keefe can continue not playing him.

I was going to say, maybe if he wasn't constantly injured or a defensive liability he'd be played more. I get that some of it is the staff but I don't understand what he thinks he's entitled to.
