2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

A snippet from a Jonas Siegel article about how Matthews is looking healthwise these days:

If you have a smartwatch or fitness tracker of some sort, this will be familiar: an algorithm that calculates a readiness score based on some current measures relative to baseline (heart rate variability, resting heart rate, skin/body temp, any records of recent exercise loads, etc.). On consumer devices the algorithms are hit or miss; for Andy O'Brien's team, probably a bit more dialed in, especially with the biometric trackers the players wear during games and practices.

CJ mentioned that Chris Tanev wanted to get back into the game when he was pulled. I'm guessing something in the biomarkers got red-flagged.

Chayka is a data and fitness and data-fitness obsessive, so hopefully this pays off.

Fun bit from the same article:
Asked if things were different under Hiller than they were the previous two seasons with Craig Berube as coach, Matthews said, “It’s — yeah.”

“I mean, everybody plays the same way but has their own little tweaks to it,” he said. “But I liked our past coaches, too. I have a lot of respect for Chief; I liked Chief a lot. I liked Sheldon (Keefe) a lot.”
End of sentence.

Vancouver just waived Raty

This frees up an SPC while gaining NHL-centre depth (if you were considering Quillan to be a winger the way it looked like the front office seemed to be)

Are we trying to woo Connor Bedard?
I didn't see Buhr play for the Marlies last season. He played 5 games and no playoffs. He did not crack the Marlies this season so they sent him to their ECHL affiliate Cincinnati who has not played a game yet. Hard to imagine that as a big loss at this point.
I did see Quillan - the game he returned from injury. He played center and I thought he was pretty good. He helped the Marlies throughout the playoffs when he wasn't hurt. Can't say I would have ever projected him as an NHL regular.
