Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

I don't get the B. Schenn hype. 33 years old. Has 3 years left on his deal at a $6.5mil AAV. Has had his point pace drop in 4 straight seasons now. And apparently St. Louis wants a "mammoth" return for him. That last point kinda kills any interest for me.

Now if he came with retention and a handful of our secondary trade pieces (Robertson, Niemela, ect) then maybe. But if it's a 1st rounder and full cap hit no thanks.

Also, he doesn't exactly have a history of being a significant producer in the playoffs. If he were a cheap rental, sure, he could be an upgrade for 3rd line C, but, at the acquisition plus ongoing cap concerns, it's a pretty easy pass for me.

It's a Sellers Market out there.... multiple teams competing for limited assets. Limited by the number of teams that are Sellers, given most teams are still close contention, especially in the East.

Colorado must have gotten word of the salary cap increase prior to the public and quickly dealt Rantenen because his numbers, just like perhaps other players in contract years (MM16), are going to be historic player-friendly numbers this summer.

Now it's reported that Carolina is having difficulty on agreement with Rantenen.

This means players with term are more valuable in the current trade market than before the cap increase. Leafs will need to give up top prospects and 1st rounds to get quality. Maybe even someone off the bench? So getting term... like we got with McCabe, should be a priority, and definitely will be more expensive now in the market w cap increases. It's not just Schenn (with term on his contract) that will require a Mammoth Return.... probably every player that's not a rental.

Expect to say bye bye to some quality assets beyond draft picks if Leafs can even put together a deal in this market.

Yup. That’s why I don’t want us to bother taking a swing unless it’s a dinger (Robertson + Domi for Dylan Larkin or Tage Thompson type of situation; I.e. Fireable offense for the other GM).

I’ll take walks (bottom pairing reinforcements for a 4th) but I don’t want to waste resources on middling returns, unless we have an addition by subtraction (-Domi, -Reaves)

Bro

If we get Kerfoot instead of McCann, I will cry.

Cost is quite different (Kerfoot is probably just a low pick).

To TOR: Jared McCann, Brandon Tanev (50% retained) | 6.75M
To SEA: Domi (pls), Benoit, Minten, Robertson, (Niemela or Villeneuve), 2025 2nd (FLA) | 3.75 + 1.35 + (0.816) + 0.875 + (0.856) = 5.975M

Leafs waive Reaves+Holmberg etc to make space. Make another separate deal for D depth.

Or pay more picks to get retention on McCann instead (harder)

McCann is going to be in high demand if he's on the trade block (NJD, VAN, WPG, etc).

I'm not super convinced McCann is a full-time centre. I know Seattle moved him there post-deadline last year and they still ended up giving Stephenson a big UFA deal instead of playing McCann at C this season.

So... why not both? Would require some aggressive cap clearing moves, but...

OUT: Domi, Kampf, Minten, Robertson, other various futures required
IN: McCann, Kerfoot (50% retained)

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
McCann-Tavares-Marner
McMann-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok
Lorentz-Holmberg-Pacioretty
Dewar-Reaves

Rielly-OEL
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-Myers
Timmins

Woll
Stolarz

That leaves a little over a million in cap space. There's about $3.6mil in the press box there though so additional space could still be created if a not-too-expensive defenceman becomes available.

Let's put McMann and McCann on the same line. 🥴

That would be my plan

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Tanev-Tavares-Jarnkrok
McMann-McCann-Nylander
Dewar/Pacioretty-Kampf-Lorentz

Flip the 3 RWs as the situation requires

Probably still missing a forechecky depth forward (esp if Jarnkrok can’t go, then it'd be Holmberg)

Edit:
Brandon Tanev is normally a 4th liner on a crappy Seattle team, so why do I have him on Tavares' wing? He still has wheels and forechecks well to free up pucks. He averages about 14 min a night (inc PK) which is about Tavares' event strength TOI. Tavares in this lineup is a checking line, which he has shown he can do; if we are chasing the game, it's an easy swap to shorten the bench and inject Tavares as needed. You really can't rely on him for transition style offense though -- his game is maximized with two forechecking wingers supporting the wall grind and freeing up pucks into the slot for him to finish.
