Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

I don't hate the idea of a Kerfoot reunion. It's not exciting but he might be a guy who flies under the radar for cost and he provides flexibility. He could play on the wing or up the middle. The same way Jarnkrok could do both (seriously he needs to just stay LTIR until the playoffs at this point. Get a game or two of conditioning in the AHL but save the cap crunch).

I do like the idea of acquiring all of the Tanev's but I do wonder if you are playing for a bit of flash that won't amount to much offensive production. I'm pretty concerned about the bottom 6's inability to score. McCann helps that quite a bit more but fitting McCann and Tanev seems to be a tough fit and I think the cost is going to be stupid for McCann.

Juuso Valimaki was placed on waivers today. I think the Leafs should be interested. Could be one of the 'change of scenery' guys.

He cleared.
Bizarre career. 16th overall pick that doesn't really click with the Flames Gets claimed off waivers by Arizona after Treliving waives him. Completely turns his game and looks like a bit of a stud bottom pairing guy at least for 2 seasons with the Coyotes. That earns him a nice extension but he immedaitely starts looking like the Calgary-Valimaki not the Arizona one with Utah.

Maybe he just really liked Mullett Arena.

Brayden Schenn narrative being pushed on the like of The Athletic.

Let's go get both the Schenns

I just want a depth D.

Upfront, we have Jankrok coming back, Holmberg has awakened from his coma, and Robertson/McMann/Lorentz have been contributing outside of the top 6 of late. The forwards look pretty good. We are missing that playoff assassin(s) but that will have to come from within (core 4) or it will be the usual early exit.

Centers: Matthews, Tavares, Domi, Kamf, Jankrok
Staple Wingers: Knies, Nylander, Marner, McMann, Holmberg, Robertson, Lorentz
Depth forwards: Reaves, Dewar, Pacioretty, Steeves, Mitten, Grebenkin

Regarding Brayden Schenn, Schenn and Tavares are about the same age. I don't think it's wise to have two older guys making $6-7M in the next couple of seasons and if I had to pick one it's Tavares. Minten and Cowan need an opportunity as well unless we trade them which I rather not. I would not leverage the future for Schenn.

Rants numbers away from Mac are not good this year. Numbers look decent with, without Aho though.
CF% with...57%, w/o 43%~Mac w/o Rant 55%
SCF% with...59%, w/o 43%~Mac w/o Rant 58%
XGF% with 56%, w/o 37%~Mac w/o Rant 54%
GF% with 55%, w/o 50%~Mac w/o Rant 66%
HDCF% with 51%, w/o 35%~Mac w/o Rant 58%
HDGF% with 42%, w/o 36%~Mac w/o Rant 73%

If you look at the Leafs they have Benoit and Timmins 5-6 D, and Holmberg occupying a spot on the 2nd line. If (big if) Hakanpaa can be available in the playoffs the Leafs still need another defensemen imo. They need a top 6 winger too.

Even if Brayden Schenn can be had for free, it's not a great move. He's on the decline and has 3 years left after this one at $6.5m. Doesn't make sense to me.

Very hard pass on Rantanen or any other high-cost addition.

This team is built around Auston Matthews and Auston Matthews is not right this year. He isn't scoring, he hasn't dominated a single game all season. It is really unfortunate because they finally have goaltending that could take them deep. My view is that they offload Domi, and tinker with the bottom 6. Then the postseason plan is to hope Tanev & McCabe stay healthy, Rielly plays like he's doing right now, Marner ups his game, Nylander doesn't migraine-out, let Matthews add whatever diminished juice he can, and hope the goaltending lets them go on a run like MTL did in the bubble season.

The goal should be to get Matthews healthy for the playoffs.

Ideally, we don't have more than one of Bennoit, Myers and Timmins playing at a time in a playoff game.
