Auston Matthews

Ask Ottawa fans how they felt during the playoff series back in the early 2000's.  I don't think the Leafs are the only team that has been subjected to this.

That's different, the playoffs are a national broadcast, that's a different beast entirely.

Regular season games usually have a consistent team friendly crew calling games for every other team. Big national games aside.

Well I have always viewed it that Saturday nights are a national telecast.  Also, the complaints against Bob Cole and Harry Neale were that they were Leaf homers, and that everything the Leafs did was awesome, and that everything the Sens did was by some nameless player who got lucky.

So the argument does kind of fit.  If Saturday night hockey is national then it should be presented by an unbiased person.  The same as the playoffs back between 2000 and 2004.

And we know that Bob Cole was certainly not a Leafs fan and neither was Harry Neale.

Habs and Sabres. ^

But that's beside the point, I understand national broadcasts being impartial, Hughson simply is not.

My point is mostly about the rest of the games, the Leafs don't get the same home friendly broadcasts as other teams.

Try watching a local Sens game on TSN, the announcers basically have pom-pom's.

Judging by their attendance, they could use all the help they can get.

But isn't that sort of the point? Bob Cole isn't a Leafs fan by any measurement we know of. But Sens fans thought he was "biased" against them. Is that compelling evidence that Sens fans are jerks or that maybe, just maybe, there's a little bit of confirmation bias at work here?

I've long made the argument that there isn't a need for impartiality from broadcast teams(they're not journalists) and we shouldn't fall into the trap of confusing neutrality with objectivity(objectivity is good, neutrality is boring and frequently bad) but even so I think we have to acknowledge that we may not be the best judges of where broadcasts rate in that regard.

That was funny.

Me, I like Hughson just fine.  Bowen is awful.  But there you have it, there's no accounting for taste.  Or tastelessness.  Or figuring out who has which.

Bowen is a little over-the-top at times, for sure. A little too much of a 'homer' for my liking. I'd like to see someone in between where he is and where Hughson is - someone that is definitely a Leafs fan and isn't afraid to show it, but also provides a rational and balanced perspective on things. Get the excitement in there while also being able to call out the Leafs for their mistakes/praise the other team for good plays/not blame the officials for missing penalties on plays that aren't penalties, etc.

Bang on, just the way I feel.  I don't have any problems with homers on local telecasts, that's part of the fun.  But the best ones are just as you described.

Well played, sir.

Did Joe Bowen ask you to pay for something once?

Yeah, my valuable time listening to him.

I liked Beyak when he was paired with Jim, they were a good homer duo.

I rather have a 100% Auston instead of a 95% Auston.  They shouldn't rush it.  Even if Matthews needs to miss a few more games, so be it.

The Leafs need to learn how to coalesce without their top guy, in which winning these back-to-back games against Boston were a testimonial to that.

Or it could have been a testimonial that Boston is just a bad team.

Bad Boston team or not, it's still testimonial to the fact that the Leafs won without Monsieur Matthews.  :)

Auston still out against Devils tonight. I'm guessing they're waiting until he's one-hundred percent, and he's ninety-five right now. He's the franchise for the next decade. It's worth it.

Maybe he's just a healthy scratch cause he's been outperformed by other guys since he's been out?  Babcock doesn't want to break the news.

Matt Martin did have three assists in one game.

and Matthews hasn't achieved that this season.

The last time he got 3 assists was last season Feb 21, 2016 against Winnipeg, but two of them were on the power play. Martin's were all even strength.

Edit: Martin is also leading the team in faceoff percentage at 100%. Which is also tops in the league.

You know, all this time, we were attributing the Leafs turnaround to Matthews, but maybe, just maybe.....

At his draft, Matthews was asked who he thought the best player at the draft was. His answer: Clayton Keller.
