Auston Matthews

Yeah, Matthews is legit hurt and they need to let him sit until he is better.

They?ve given themselves a little cushion by racking up points early.

Let the kid heal.

It of course hasn?t helped that they?ve added two worker bees to his line to try and protect him from board work and therefore opposition can focus on Matthews with nobody else on the line capable of doing anything really creative.

This is a line of reasoning I hadn't thought of before.

But if they are shielding him it makes more sense to hold him out than saddle him with suboptimal linemates.  Although Brown can finish.

I hate to say it but I wonder if he will be fighting back problems his whole career.
Isn't the thinking that he may have back problems his whole career a little premature?

I think it stems from a report that he missed time in his draft year due to a back problem, and now that this has come up this year, it probably has some people a little worried.

Exactly.  As a Leafs fan, my DNA is to latch onto worst-case scenarios and ride them into the ground.

Auston talking at practice today. Did not feel well after the collision with Reilly. Had symptoms, feels great now. Awesome news, in the old days the player would just battle through it, and concussions being cumulative, a second and third concussion could follow quickly. Now the player is sat immediately and doesn't return until 100%.

Mario Lemieux had a severe back problem.  He seemed to do okay.  Also Jason Spezza has a back problem as well.  So if Matthews does have a back problem, and if he can somehow have a career that is in between those two players, I think things will be alright.

Auston reached 100 points with those 2 goals yesterday. Not too shabby...100pts(57goals) in his first 112gp.

My only ever so slight disappointment with him lately is he has missed on a few times when he's been in all alone. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a guy with his skill to cash those 100% of the time, if not more.

Freddie pulls Freddie: INCEPTION.

Not that this will surprise many, but including last season and this season's to-date numbers, Mr Matthews is tied for 2nd with Ovechkin for total goals at 65 and is 1st in even-strength goals by a long shot at 55. His EVG/game is ridiculous.

Of his 25 goals this year, 23 are even strength!

He's 20 years old.
