Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

Shanahan will do better the Gretzky the other rumored president candiate.  All Gretzky would have done is hire his friends and family.

What is this assumption based on? Is this something that Gretzky, the businessman, has been known to do?

I think it's probably based on Gretzky's time in Phoenix where his former agent got the GM job and, I believe, his brother was their head scout. Although to single out Gretzky for nepotism in an industry rife with it seems unfair.

Ah okay well that explains it I guess. I'd venture a guess that Shanahan is an only child but with a last name like that, there's no way there's fewer than four in that brood!

Alright Shanny. It'll be two weeks on Monday since you've been hired, and promised to get to work straight away......What's the verdict already???

I know, you probably promised Gary you wouldn't disrupt the league anymore until there is a lull in the playoffs or something, but come on..... So far, this years playoffs has been one giant lull if you ask me.

Watching most the teams in currently in the playoffs, sans Tampa, their are vastly on a different level of play. Their defence is especially telling compared to the Leafs. I know the level of play is different compared the regular season. I get that. But it just seems like the Leafs have a lot of work to do. In the playoffs a team needs four lines running on all cylinders.

We are what, 4 or 5 years into this rebuild/retool/re-just-win-for-gawds-sake.

Shanny has his work cut out for him.

Leafs need a #1 centre who will crash the net, an improved PP and PK, a defensive system that can transition to offence while minimizing opposing lines and an offensive system that can control the puck.  If it means switching up 1 or 2 d-men and forwards, then fine.

I think the only outside need we have is Centre, perhaps Stasney???
We have some very capable D-Men available to move up, Granbury, Percy, Macwilliam? with more to fill the ranks in the Marlies?Finn, Loov and more.
Any wingers are also available in the Marlies, D'Amigo, Leivo, Abbott?
We don't need that many changes we just need a good solid puck possession coach.

I want these two on board, with what ever coach is hired, Scott Stevens and Kirk Muller. this I believe is a good fix for our defense.

Kirk Muller is currently head coach of the Hurricanes.

edit: for now at least...

Word out of Leafland is that Shanny and Nonis have great synergy. There you have it. Thanks Tim!

I said it after the press conference (maybe not here but elsewhere) and I will say it again after that Lieweke interview... Nonis is staying.

Also.. wow so in 2 weeks since Shanny was hired no major changes have been made? GASP!

He must be liking what he sees with this group.

But I am sticking with my story that changes will come when the Raptors bow out of the playoffs. They dont want any Leafs related media stealing the spotlight from the Raptors who currently are the darlings of this city.

That is a good possibility too. I could see that, or at least maybe after the 1st round is over.

Timmy said Shanny was having tonnes of 1:1's with players, coaches and even executive assistant types around the whole team.  In most cases, 2 weeks is hardly enough time for a new exec to get to know an organization and I think we should generally be enthused by the fact he's taking the time while he has it to understand all he can before pulling the trigger on anything.

Are there any advanced stastistical measures for tracking synergy?  Maybe a coefficient we can multiply something by??  I want changes!!!  Something to make up for the futility of this season!!  Shanny, fire someone!

Rant over...  :P
