Strange condition for the trade, since I don't think Mike Brown will be the difference between the Oilers making or missing the playoffs.

Ya, surprised they got that kind of a condition.

TSNBobMcKenzie: BTW, TOR now cheering for EDM to make playoffs this year. If so, 4th rder in 2014 for Mike Brown becomes 3rd rder in 2014.

Enh.

Now this I like!

Though I'm sort of dumbfounded why the Oilers make this deal.  Potentially a third (wow) for a facsimlie of Ben Eager?  And they have Darcy Hordichuk on the roster.  Brown is tough, but he's not an answer to the Flames getting McGrattan.  Now granted, I don't follow the Oilers enough, but I'm not seeing why they paid a premium for Mike Brown.

I'll miss the work ethic and the character. He was a good team guy as well.

Kinda disappointed this means McLaren and Orr are regulars in the lineup..

Aren't they already? Also, when Lupul comes back, another player goes.

I have no problem with Brown leaving the team. Actually I am glad. The Leafs need more skill, more finishing touch, more killer instinct and Brown does not have any of this. The Leafs employ way too many pugilists and if one of them was suposed to go they correctly opted for the smallest, most fragile and least productive. And let?s face it Brown regressed over last two years and right now he is no more than a fighter. He was nice character guy but this dressing room seems to be OK in that regard. MacLaren came for free, Brown fetched 4th rounder. That?s great. Wish him well in Edmonton.

When Lupul gets back I imagine Steckel is next.

I think Orr or Liles are next. As much as Carlyle hasn't used him, Steckel provides more value as the 13th forward than Orr does, and I'm sure he recognizes that.

You are probably right on Liles if there is a trade market for him.  Orr I don't think is going anywhere at all. If you consider the 3rd line minutes he was getting recently, I think that tells us where he sits in the coach's mind.

Definitely Liles, but I suspect Carlyle likes having a couple heavyweights in the lineup. Moving Brown means that's an option still on the 4th line once folks are healthy.

If everyone healthy

Lupul ? Bozak ? Kessel
MacArthur ? Grabovski ? Kulemin
JvR ? Kadri ? Frattin
Komarov ? McClement ? Orr/McLaren

Which - I guess - means Steckel is odd man out.

Btw. this is a decent line-up. Hopefully Lups and Phil rediscover the magic and we have two very dangerous lines. Komarov-McCLement-Orr/McLAren line is easily capable to play 10 minutes per game.

I agree with you 100% CF.  When it was Orr getting 3rd line minutes I figured that about as big of an endorsement a coach could give him.  I mean wow!  I like Orr and what he brings and I wouldn't have put him on the 3rd line.

Carlyle also said "it's amazing how things quiet down out there when he is on the ice." I think Carlyle also said he felt he was one of the leaders in the room. As much as they seem to have embraced McLaren who can actually even play a little bit, he doesn't have the same cache that Orr does.  We know how much Carlyle likes toughness so Orr is going to be etched in the fabric of this team at least for the rest of this year, contract extension notwithstanding after that.

I was looking at the Stanley Cup winning Anaheim's forward group and the bottom 6 inlcuded Shawn Thornton, Brad May George Parros, PIM leader Rob Neidermayer with 39 PIMS, and Travis Moen.  Also the top 6 had Chris Kunitz, Perry and Getzlaf who had as many PIMs as the Ducks 4th line.  Selanne, Penner and McDonald were basically the only regular forwards on that team with less than 10 PIMs in the playoffs.

All that to say that back then Carlyle liked the rougher players.

this is the 2nd time that Carlyle has been coach and Mike Brown moved out.

Might have been noted earlier but interesting nonetheless.

Yup, that'd be my group going forward this year.  Imagine upgrading Bozak with a true number 1 center somehow?  Getzlaf slots in there so nicely it's crazy.

Yeah but I think for that to happen, somehow his wife has to be convinced that Toronto is as nice as California.
