Burke Fired

This comes as a huge surprise. I am really interested in knowing the why part of this before commenting too much more. It doesn't really make sense (yet).

This is crazy, I wonder if the Luongo thing has anything to do with it or is just the new owners didn't like him?

Say what you want about Burke - but I really thought bringing him in was the beginning on a non-knee jerk reaction phase to the Leafs. I thought this was going to be an era of stability. Whether you liked his moves or not, you certainly got the sense that he was thinking long term, not just the season in question.

Crazy timing and complete mismanagement by the Leafs!

That said its a results driven position and Burke has been here over 4 years and gotten this team nowhere during his tenure.

I'm fine with Burke leaving but the timing of this decision is nuts! I agree that there is some underlying reason behind the decision that Joe Fan hasn't or won't be made aware of.

Hopefully MLSE doesn't just move Nonis in and use him like a puppet.  ::)

@SportsnetSpec: Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

Um wtf?

Maybe he's refusing to consider Luongo and he's been told we'll find someone who will?

Or the other way around - Burkie wanted to bring Roberto and was said firm no and in furry he offered his resignation, which to everyones surprise was accepted...

@wyshynski: "There must be more to this Burke firing" = "We've all heard rumors about Burke we can't report and we'll just assume they're true now."

This may actually bring me back as a fan.  It's been a long time coming - really, he's done very little right as GM beyond a whole lot of bluster.

Ditto. I had little interest in the coming. Burke had some good moves, more bad ones and no home runs.

The louder they are, the harder they fall. I'm pretty sure this is not hockey related at all.

I thought Burke was present during one of the negotiations in November with Yzerman and Jacobs?

It's hard to find any confirmation of that particular meeting - the only article I can find comes from the less than reliable Travis Yost - but, even if he did, Burke and Bettman have some history of working together, so, it wouldn't necessarily have been a "representing the Leafs" moment as much as him having history with the Commish.

That "recapture" clause for the long contracts was supposed to be written
by Burke himself (who knows).

I think it's a plain disagreement of direction - so Luongo (God no), or trades
of draft picks again or maybe Burke just refusing to accept involvement from the owners.

You know unlike the Pension, TSN and SN need a better team.

The timing is just stupid which leads me to think it's Luongo related.

Well if Nonis is in, he's going to do whatever Burke would not.

As much as I think my speculation is crazy, this would be sheer lunacy in comparison.

Besides the absolutely shocking timing of it, I'm not against this move.  I'm not a fan of the current construction of the team in terms of building a legitimate contender and if the new GM came in and deemed Gardiner, Rielly and our next two 1sts are the only untouchables, I wouldn't be disappointed.

As of yet, I haven't been contacted about taking the job. I'll keep you all informed.
