Lombardi and Connolly only played the 1 season for the Leafs, how sad are Burke's moves that we're trumpeting them leaving in trades and waivers so shortly after he acquired them?

Lombardi wasn't even suppose to play for the Leafs because of his injury. He was a throw in.

Yup, also worth considering the fact that he did play netted us a draft pick I believe.

Sure Lombardi was a throw-in, and we're getting a low draft pick back in dealing him, but Franson hasn't exactly set the team ablaze with his presence here, so in all this trade is still not that great (Burke's original trade).  I guess getting rid of Lebda was worth it?  Are we really any worse off if you take away Lombardi and Franson from the lineup?  At best it's a "gamble" trade that hasn't worked out yet.

The point was the Leafs received a draft pick for Lombardi because he played a certain number of games with them.

They now receive a second draft pick when trading him away.

They also received Cody Franson.

Is that worth it? You bet your ass it is.

The Predators will also get a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2013 entry draft if Lombardi plays 60 or more games over the next two seasons. If he doesn't, Toronto will acquire Nashville's fourth-rounder in 2013.

Lombardi played 62 games last season, sounds like the Leafs gave up a draft pick to Nashville, not the other way around.

Actually, the Leafs gave up a draft pick because he played more than 60 games for them.

wow really?

My apologies then Zee.

Still, getting more than a bag of pucks for Lebda is a win.

Any asset is better than no asset.

Yeah. I mean, basically, the deal breaks down as the Leafs sending Lebda, Slaney, a 4th in 2013 and some cash for a season of Lombardi, Franson and a 3rd or 4th in 2014. Being that Lebda and Slaney are completely worthless, even if Franson doesn't become anything more than a 3rd pairing type, it's a win for the Leafs.

Exactly, and if Franson can get back to playing the way he did in Nashville, he should be able to fill in that #5/#6 roll quite nicely. Add to that, the fact that he can put up some points and you have a definite win in the deal for Burke.

Chris Johnston of Sportsnet says that Connolly will be assigned to Marlies and Nonis is NOT pursuing a trade option for him.

Tim Connolly will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies. Dave Nonis is not pursuing a trade option for him at this time

"at this time" being key. I still think he finishes the season outside the Leaf organization.

mirtle: At 31 years of age, Connolly has never played a game in the minors. Went straight to the NHL out of OHL back in 1999.

Yeah he's either in the NHL or injured.

I think it would be a big mistake to trade him. If one or two of Bozak/Grabs/Kadri go down we really don't have anybody who can replace them. Colborne has been disappointing up to this point and McClement/Steckel can't really play in an offensive role.

Being down there with Aston and Frattin on his wings should be awesome.  If he takes this assignment properly he could help vault himself and Frattin back in the NHL in no time. But make no mistake he has zero time to sulk.
