Connolly placed on Waivers

Connolly scored a highlight-reel goal in his first game since being demoted earlier this week and Matt Frattin scored the shootout winner as the Marlies defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 in the American Hockey League.

Connolly said he was relieved to be playing competitive hockey games after the waiting game of the NHL lockout.

"It was good to be back in a game," he said. "It felt good for the first half and then it kind of felt like it was the end of the game for me.

"I've got a ways to go in terms of game conditioning. It's a totally different kind of conditioning."

So that last part there might have been a part of the issue they had with him at camp.

Really though, if a guy that had a disappointing season last year and going into a contract year this year can't muster up some work ethic and drive to stay in shape and show up at camp with something to prove, well then I guess that guy can go to the Marlies and play his way back into the league.

I would think that it may have been a little sobering for Tim when he cleared waivers.  But who knows, he's got a bit of a reputation of being too nonchalant.

Yeah, he's got that laissez fair attitude I find. You would think that he would be in the best shape of his life, worried that his career might be over if he dogs it. Well, 'just desserts' is what he got.

Ah well. At least he scored, and isn't pouting about it.

I think he's distinguishing "game conditioning" from his physical condition.

I just read this:

An interesting scenario plays itself out if Connolly does clear and head to the minors. The new rules allow a player to be recalled without subjection to re-entry waivers.

That's great -- they can bring up Connolly whenever they want if someone struggles, gets injured, gets traded, etc?  I figured he'd have to go through reentry waivers and someone might pick him up at half price.

Can someone confirm? Are there no more reentry waivers?  What are the circumstances when a guy has to go through waivers?  Only once per season, the first time he is sent down?

The no re-entry waivers makes sense now since there's no "cap burying" in the minors. We still have to pay a large chunk in cap space for Connolly so it's good he doesn't have to go through re-entry.

The new CBA hasn't been published so I'm not absolutely sure of all the details to answer your question.

Re-entry waivers has been eliminated. As we've had no news on other changes to waivers and the waivers calc on Gapgeek doesn't appear to have changed, I think the balance of the rules for waivers remain - which is loosely clearing waivers lasts about 10 NHL games or  30 days.

If they brought Connolly up for a few games next week and then sent him down before 10 NHL games or 30 days, I don't think he'd have to clear waivers again. If they kept him beyond 29 days or beyond 9 NHL games and then sent him down, I think he'd have to clear waivers again.

Here's a write up of the 2005 CBA waivers rules:

Just ignore the re-entry stuff and it's probably pretty close.
