Contract: Skittles Edition

Yeah maybe my July 1st offer sheet scenario isn't that outrageous. Ah well, welcome to the team Erik Karlsson.

I've been wrong a lot in my day but my "Good Ol' Hometown kid Marner will be the easiest signing of the 3" is probably going to go down as one of my worst misses.

Marner's agent: Hey, it wouldn't be right to negotiate in season. We don't want contract talks to distract Marner from playing to his absolute best on his quest for the Cup.

Also Marner's agent later that same day: Mitch's GM and his past GM are screwing over my client and I'm gonna make them pay hard if it's the last god damn thing that I do. Print that.

Why is he going through the media? Why is he holding Kyle hostage to Lou's bizarre standard? How does this not sow dischord in the team? What a fucking circus. One wonders how much Paul Marner's pushing the agent on this and how much is the Darren Ferris.

On a side note, all three players being eligible to sign contracts at the same time really put a wrinkle in things.

Eh, that one is pretty fair. If you'd already sacrificed millions of dollars because of Lamoriello's garbage you'd be pretty intent on getting your money's worth on your next deal regardless of who was in charge.

Yeah. And if I remember correctly, it's something fans speculated might happen down the road.

I'm still aboard #TeamMarkStone.  Right winger who directly replaces Marner and we get the 4 first rounders to boot.  He can even change his number from 61 to 16.  We'll hardly notice, well except for the weight change.

Darren Ferris on the radio this morning.  He said the article by Feschuk used comments from this past summer.  He's basically blaming Feschuk for releasing the article yesterday.  He said they had good discussions leading up to the season and that they were close on numbers.

Only in Toronto (and Montreal) does media do stuff like this.  He probably did talk to Feshchuk yesterday since he referenced the Matthews contract, but Fes decided to use some previous quotes to spice up the article a bit and get more hits.

Something seems kinda fishy here. Obviously like you said Ferris must have said some of this to Feschuk yesterday with the references to Matthews. Here's all of his direct quotes:

?That?s probably the best contract in the National Hockey League,? said Darren Ferris, the agent whose client list includes Maple Leafs? star Mitch Marner. ?There?s no team-friendly discount there.?

?So far they?ve been trying to lowball (Marner),? Ferris said. ?That?s the reason we?ve come to this point.?

?Nobody else is taking a discount. And now you?re asking (Marner) to take one again? It?s nonsense,? Ferris said. ?Mitch already did them a favour on the entry-level deal.?

?This is great for all players. I think it?s a great contract for the player,? Ferris said. ?As long as they treat Mitch with the same respect, there shouldn?t be an issue.?

?Mitch will get what Mitch is due. But as far as the Maple Leafs, it?s up to them how they value him. If it works out with them, it works out,? Ferris said. ?We?ll see at the end of the year what their position is and whether they?re motivated to sign Mitch or not. ?It?s totally up to them.?

I dunno, most of those sound like current quotes to me and if he did say any of those to someone in the summer they would have definitely made their way into a story then and not now.

Oh. so what Ferris meant to say was that the quotes all referred to events from the summer (that was when Marner was reportedly being low-balled, which I mean seems pretty fair from a Dubas POV).

Also "unfortunate comments that surfaced"... YOU WERE THE ONE WHO SAID THEM TO A REPORTER ON THE RECORD.

Then there's this:

Yeah, way to avoid distractions Ferris. Starting to realize why this guy isn't exactly a big name agent.

Ferris seems like a bit of a weasel.  I get that he's all for his client and is trying to get the best deal possible, but we don't hear from the guy all season, then the day of the Matthews contract signing he agrees to an interview knowing full well that an article would be released.  All his BS about not negotiating in season is window dressing to cover up the fact they were just waiting for the Matthews contract and want to demand the exact same deal.

I saw the double down from Feshchuk about the comments actually being from yesterday, which as you said make sense since Ferris references the Matthews contract, and then Ferris replies that he meant he was referring to the situation in the summer so his quotes were taken out of context.  I wouldn't buy a car from this guy, seems like a shady prick.

Anyway, regardless, I am glad that Dubas is playing hardball with Marner. I'm glad they're waiting until the offseason to get this done. I've said this before but I hope he isn't the first of the big batch of non-Matthews RFAs to sign this year. Rantanen and Point are both outscoring him. Aho and Tkachuk aren't that far behind. Let some of them get their deals done and I think that'll be a reality check for Marner and his camp.

Bob McKenzie has said something, and I'm paraphrasing, that the Marner camp doesn't buy the center vs. winger argument of the center being more valuable and that Marner is every bit as valuable to the Leafs as Matthews.

If that's true it just reinforces my earlier comments that Ferris might not be all that bright. C v. W absolutely makes a difference.

It just irks me that Ferris all along maintained no contract discussions in season to "avoid distractions" and then he does a friggin media blitz on the day of the Matthews signing to get his message out.  It's all over media and twitter today, this isn't a distraction for Mitch?  Prick.

There have been agents like Mark Gandler who seemed more annoying to deal with but Ferris really seems like a guy out of his element a bit with how he is going off.  I don't think Dubas is going to hold stuff against Marner in this situation but I agree that this has a bad taste look with Ferris talking about not negotiating during the season but then essentially negotiating through the media during the season.

At the end of the day this really just looks bad on Marner and I can't imagine that he would be all that happy with how things are playing out in that way.  It's also pretty dickish to take away from Matthews day with his contract signing.

100%  Everything out of his mouth was bullshit.  This entire notion of "no distractions in season" is stupid when it's just Dubas and Ferris talking numbers, Mitch doesn't even have to hear about it unless they're close on a deal.  That's not a distraction at all.  What Ferris did yesterday and today is a distraction.

He is simply stating no one else is taking a discount, we won't either.

Why grant an interview the day of the Matthews contract if he wanted no distractions?  His simple answer to Feschuk should have been "sorry, no interview"
