I just don't get how this announcement can be framed this way when they're also saying we can still visit non-essential businesses for curbside pick up until 8pm everyday. How is that a "stay at home" order?

Food is an essential?

I wasn't referring to curbside takeout. I'm referring to the fact that today's announcement specifically says various "non-essential" retail stores are allowed to be open from 7am-8pm... but because of the supposed stay-at-home order we're only supposed to be going out for "essential" reasons.

I basically just don't like the messaging of us being in a stay-at-home state. It sounds very, very strict but doesn't actually change anything that we were allowed to do last week.

Yes I went back and read the rest of the conversation. I get it.

I understand some of the hesitation/reservations but if you are interested I'm happy to give a bigger rundown on safety and mechanisms if yourself or others want it.  (For disclosure I got my Step 1 vaccine and will have my second shot before the end of the month)

Oh, I don?t have any concerns. I can just understand why some might have some around it being the first of its kind.

What is pissing me off the most, is the National is reporting new cases and deaths every day.  Last nights episode had little to nothing on the vaccine(s) and roll out programs.  While the statistics on numbers and deaths are necessary, those of us waiting (with underlying conditions) for a jab want to do know what the plan is for the roll-out, timetables, progress and any innovative plans for distribution (how about Shoppers Drug Mart, who have freezer capacity for the Pfizer vaccine). What about updates on when the other vaccines will be here;  Johnson and Johnson, will the Oxford vaccine be here, etc. etc.

Canadians want hope, not more misery.  Light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Here's the updated file for Ontario:
https://files.ontario.ca/moh-enhanced-provincewide-shutdown-2021-01-12-v2.pdf

Could they make this more terrible? "Ice rinks open subject to conditions."

Cool. cool.
What conditions?

For some reason, ski hills remain closed, but ice rinks are open.

This document states all schools closed, decision for most public health units on Jan-20 (outside of the major centres.) Website says schools in Northern Ontario stay open. Is it that hard to be consistent?

See, this I don't get. Travel is allowed. Anyone can go for a vacation anywhere; there are thousands of people travelling in and out of Pearson Airport every day. Visitors, Canadians, Residents, everybody. Coming/going for vacation, holidays, anything. Unless this type of travel is barred, why is this a scandal?

I think it speaks to the fundamental problem with Ford's whole approach. He's a "small government Conservative" so he doesn't want to outright bar things or actually enforce quarantines, he's just asking people to be "responsible" and do those things voluntarily. So when important people do things that aren't outright banned but they've been "asked" not to do by the Premier it makes the strategy look especially bad.

I'm confused. Are you upset with the National for reporting numbers or for the government for not having a better vaccine rollout. Because I don't think there's a bunch of available vaccine info that the National isn't reporting. It's just not out there.

And the crazy thing is his approval rating so crazy low. Is he really worried about alienating his base when he's completely underwater politically by half assing this whole thing?

If this were true Canadians would stop being idiots and actually follow guidelines. The case and death count is a reminder that they are not.

As I've been saying from the start, it's all a political game. I'm a conservative voter, but Ford is a completely spineless buffoon. He's not the only one playing the political game either in this country.

The first answer to "what happens if I lock things down?" shouldn't be "I may lose votes." It should be "I may save lives". But, that's not how it's being handled. It's being handled with half measures and double talk. I really could give 2 craps about the $200 for school children. I don't give a flying F about the newest tag lines and slogans. What I want is a politician with a backbone to actually take a stance. The wishy washy position our provincial and national government has taken on all of this is exactly why we are in the place we are.

This plan would be significantly more useful, morally right, and effective at slowing the spread if they mandated and bolstered sick leave pay. It is otherwise just officially shrugging.

So in response to the gravest public health threat in our lifetimes, the Province can't define anything, enforce anything or even require any compliance.

Boy, I sure hope those dollar beers were worth it.

Fairly escalated on a personal level here.

My dad tested positive about 2 weeks ago. He was mostly OK bar feeling pretty lousy. We couldn't work out where he'd picked it up.

Then about a week later my aunt also tested positive. My cousin also tested positive and my other aunt has had symptoms but didn't get a test.

The same day my granny was taken into hospital after a couple of weeks of not being great and having rapidly worsened. She tested positive and is now on a ventilator in ICU having had a blood oxygen level that was massively below the safe minimum level.

My granny (aged 94) is housebound and in a wheelchair so has carers visit the house a couple of times a day to do bits and pieces to help her out. My dad and 2 aunts had been taking turns to pop in and visit at a social distance stood in the porch through the window. We now suspect the carers have brought it in and my dad and aunts and cousin have picked it up there. Scary how quick it escalated.

Thanks Herman. Just wanted to put it out there as a warning almost. Literally 2 weeks ago nothing and now it?s tearing through the family like wildfire.

Also just how it can impact different people differently. Obviously on her 90s it?s a bad thing as the stats show, but my dad is late 60s and said it was basically like a mild flu with one day of a really thumping headache and fever, yet late 60s is also in the danger zone stats wise.
