I'm not sure what that chart says considering most of those guys signed as RFA's  (i.e. they'd get a lot more on the open market, Ryan, Benn, Kane, Kessel, Neal) or they were signed to back diving deals lowering the cap hit (Hossa) but all were signed under a different CBA. Not really a fair comparison of all those guys IMO.

Make me choose between Gionta, Doan (at this point in his career), Havlat, Hemsky or Clarkson @ 5M-5.3 and I'd without much hesitation I know who I'd choose.

The only person who's getting the shaft on a contract here (since signing) is Lupul. If Horton were completely healthy I might choose him.

Judging how quickly Lupul signed his deal with Toronto, it's my guess that he took less knowingly, because he really wants to be a part of the organization in the coming years. I think the players believe that the team is going to have a real shot in the next 3-5 years.

Off topic - I was half asleep last night. Did I see correctly that the Leafs re-signed Coalbourne?

Yup, one year deal at around 600k I think, however that is not official (AAV) yet.

Good, more money to sign the last 4 RFAs

I don't find it very comforting that almost all those guys are into their early to mid 30s and still outscoring Clarkson over those periods.

And when Lupul signed, a lot of critics went nuts that it was an over-payment.  Horton is the closest comparable and both players in terms of what they bring are quite similar.  I'm actually surprised Horton didn't get a bit more money.

I think you can really only compare him to others who have signed UFA deals, or deals in their UFA year.  Otherwise it's not really comparable.

If the only thing you care about is points, and it seems that is the case, then yeah you can be upset.  Difference being Clarkson brings about a bazillion other qualities to the table most of those guys don't bring a sniff of.  But I can't quantify them, soooo...............  :-\

Well ok fair enough, but I think we can agree (as I've said earlier) that Clarkson is overpaid by 500K-1M due to UFA bidding etc. I think we can also agree that Hossa has an artificially low cap hit due to years added on the end of his contract and that Doan signed for less than he could have received on the UFA market to stay in Phoenix. Havlat was on a 6M per contract before and signed for 6 years, 30M to get the term presumably but has injury concerns.

If Hossa and Doan are making 6M (as they should really be doing) and Clarkson is making what he is then it's not as ridiculous. Comparing contracts isn't a black and white kind of business (at least I don't look at it that way).

Sure, as I've said many times in various threads, Clarkson is overpaid by 500K-1M per year and the contract is 1-2 years too long, but them's the breaks when signing UFA's. To then compare him to players that were signed as RFA's or are pure scorers (Hossa, Havlat) on "creative" deals, doesn't make the contract any worse.

Here's Lucic for comparison (25 yrs old, 6M x 3 years RFA contract):

GPG: 0.30    APG 0.42

Younger, basically bang on the scoring average, and paid 900K more for "intangibles" (?), or is he just way overpaid? He's played on better teams, with better linemates (forward and D) and his defensive numbers should be better as his teams hardly give up any goals. He's a better player and is paid as such. He'll also probably get a lot more than Clarkson in 3 years time if he chooses the UFA rout (something like 6.5-7M per x 5-7).

-6 defence and -13 undisciplined play though.

He's also a -15 in ability to produce in high pressure situations, a -8 in consistency and a -6 in clutchness.

Isn't "ability to produce in high pressure situations" and "clutchness" the same thing?

I'm telling you guys...mike knuble...check out his career stats...didn't do anything before 30 and then became a mostly 25+goal scorer for 9 years after 30.

for the people that love the signing (which I do) this is the guy
