Deadline day thread

TSN's updated tradebait board:

B_ENx5mWsAA_hH9.jpg

Other than the Leafs who likely won't actually get dealt and are mostly there to draw in ratings, that's a godawful list of available players.

What the hell? Coburn gets a 1st a 3rd and Gudas from Tampa.

Apparently the Leafs wanted that 1st for Polak

God you gotta shop Dion if that's the package Coburn gets.

This from the Kipper:

According to Sportsnet?s Nick Kypreos, the Maple Leafs are trying ?real hard? to move captain Dion Phaneuf.

?It?s abundantly clear that he won?t be the captain next year,? Kypreos said Sunday on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. ?So the sooner they can get him out, the better. They?re trying real hard to make that deal going into (Monday).

Kypreos added Phaneuf appeals to a handful of teams in need of an upgrade on the back end, but the Leafs will have to retain part of his salary in order to make any trade work.

?It?s a matter of that contract,? Kypreos explained. ?As soon as there?s a number that can be agreed upon, he will not be a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.?

Oilers interested...

Oilers are looking for goaltenders. They were looking at what the Maple Leafs goalies in the last few weeks. #tvasports

I think they're playing up the Leafs possibilities some for ratings. Having said that:

Fringe guys like Jokinen, Booth or Holzer (if tradeable with his concussion) aren't going to return much if they do move. But that might happen.

I can see Lupul move if they eat some of his salary. And why not eat some of his salary? ... because they're not going to be seriously contending before his deal runs out. It's almost pointless to keep him for the balance of his deal. Roll the roster!

I can't see Phaneuf or Kessel likely to move - too much money and term at this time of year with a cap crunch coming with the fall of the CDN dollar. And they're overpaid (certainly Phaneuf)

I can see Bernier maybe moved because they're rebuilding - might get something there. I can see Polak moved for similar reasons and because he's a dman - teams always looking for D.

I can see Gardiner or Bozak moved to change chemistry/direction - if they get something half decent back. Gardiner isn't likely to go to go to a playoff team.

So there's a bunch that could happen in what looks like a very active, over paying trade market.

As nearly anyone on this roster could go, I expect they'll get something more than a fringe player done in this climate. They're in rebuild mode so they'll probably take best offers for some of these guys.

It just occurred to me that Leafs are at their quota of three for eating contracts for this season. So the chances of Phaneuf moving at this time is even more reduced and Lupul's chances may not be much better. They could take a dud contract back to even up the money ... that's it.

The thing is, with the Coburn deal being another, these crazy GMs are spending first rounders like drunks right now (before a good draft). If I were the Leafs, I think I'd be trying to move anything not tied down.

I think we went through this when the Winnik trade went down, it's just him and Gunnarsson that that Leafs have retained salary on. So one more spot open.

Looking at the prices paid for Yandle and Coburn, I sure hope some other team in the East who missed out on those two are hankering for some Polak.

I really feel like nothing of significance is going to happen for the leafs today.

As I said before I really don't think anything should happen of significance today. I really don't think you want to move big contracts at the deadline.

I'm guessing one guy with term (Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak, Polak, most likely Polak) and one guy without (Jokinen, Booth, uh.. Holzer?, most likely Jokinen) are traded.

This is why I'll be spending my day checking here and not listening to "insiders" like Kypreos make stuff up so that people will watch / listen to Sportsnet.

Well, I'm five minutes into watching Sportsnet when I'm reminded of just how ridiculously dumb the coverage of today is. They're employing roughly 82,000 former players, GMs and studio meatheads and they just had some woman on reading tweets about trades from fans. Not funny, insightful tweets mind you but like "The Flyers paid a high price for Coburn" sorts of tweets.

Sportnet's classic "we need a female to do something" approach to hockey broadcasting.

This is exactly why I am not going anywhere near any form of TV or radio. Well, it would be if I weren't at work. This sort of stuff drives me crazy.
