Dell and Spezza placed on waivers

Dell and Spezza are on waivers. Roll the dice time.
I guess it is. I'm guessing it is known around the league that if they claim Spezza, he'll retire. Don't see Dell clearing but the Leafs have to make this move.

Well Dell's getting claimed by Edmonton for sure. This is a perfect situation for them since he's already in Canada. That's unfortunate. Maybe they can get him back once Smith returns.

I get the idea of the Spezza move. The Leafs need more flexibility to move players in and out of the line-up/taxi squad. Hopefully he clears.

Yeah, Dell probably gets claimed, which means the Leafs will need to do the same with someone else down the line. A lot of 3rd string goalies are going to be swapped via waivers this season.

Spezza should clear, which, as CtB says, will give the team some flexibility. Doesn?t necessarily mean he gets demoted, either.

Hasn?t Spezza loudly declared he would retire if he weren?t playing for the Leafs? Pointless waiver claim for anyone.

cc every other team in the league. Hands off.
Teams know this and if Spezza retires, that team will be on the hook for 700K and no player. I also think there is a respect aspect that teams won't take him, much like Perry in Mtl.

It's a sorry statement about the league when discussion of off-ice roster management is more compelling than the games themselves.

Thank you salary cap!! I think looking at the bigger picture, this means Robertson has a significant injury and will be going on LTIR. Leafs are trying to maximize their LTIR pool.

If Spezza were to retire after being claimed, the claiming team wouldn't be on the hook for anything. The 35+ rule only applies to the 2nd year or later of multi-year deals. Still a pointless claim, though.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think he gets claimed. Dell is as good as gone though. Unfortunately the Leafs have no choice here regarding him. I think they may use one of the kids as a 3rd if Dell gets claimed and leave Hutch with the Marlies.

I think this is still a huge failing of the league to not better account for this.  Yes the rosters wouldn?t be different but you had less flexibility with the travelling show than a full AHL.  The NHL would bend over backward to prop up an Arizona struggling to meet the cap floor but you can have Edmonton basically without a competent goaltender despite injury.  To me in the face of injuries waivers should be expect even if a guy don?t on LTIR.  That?s the real value of a taxi squad.  Not a bunch of guys who need to clear waivers to go up/down

according to the other thread, they did not have to do this (put dell on waivers) and also did not need to go in to ltir.  wonder why. at some point a goalie will likely be hurt.

I think it's more important to have the flexibility to get a guy like Lehtonen into these games then have Dell sit upstairs eating popcorn. It will also allow Keefe to sit player(s) if they're under performing.

Watch Dell beat the Leafs on Wednesday now.
Who says he's going to Edm? There are around 20 teams that can put a claim in on him before the Oilers get a chance. NJD, Chi, Ott are def possibilities.
