Don Cherry fired by Sportsnet

After reading the article, and in the interest of ideological consistency, I've come to the reluctant decision that I also don't want Justin Trudeau to host Coach's Corner.

What if he promises to only wear blackface on Halloween?

He's an unabashed Habs fan, so that won't work either.

So what's the over/under on Brian Burke taking over for Cherry?

full disclosure: I don't actually know betting terms.

I don't think they continue "Coaches Corner" as a segment, at least not for the rest of this season.  Maybe they bring it back is some shape or form at the start of next season and give someone like Burke the new role, but for now they probably do a combination of updates from around the league + insider trading/rumors section.

I think they should replace it with 1970s-vintage travelogues.

GM's Middle of the Room will begin this Saturday at 1st intermission.

I know that's been a popular theory for a while but it just seems like such a mistake to me. Feels like giving people a watered down version of what Coach's Corner has been the last 40 years would just make the people who liked Cherry more angry and do nothing for the people who didn't like Cherry.

Personally, I'd like to see more of a group discussion maybe with a few coaches. And then rotate the lineup each year as guys get hired and fired.

Next year's panel begins with Hynes, Babock, Boudreau

Yeah, a Satellite Hotstove type set-up (so not everyone needs to fly to Toronto) with a few coaches would be neat.

Honest question. Does anyone actually watch or care about intermission on HNIC?

Watch no, but care - kinda?  I really like TSN's intermission panel.  They make fun of it themselves a lot, but I quite like "the Quiz," and some of their panelists are capable of great insight.

If CBC had great intermission content, I'd watch it.  I just tuned out Don a long time ago.

Honestly? I don't think so. I remember back in the day when watching TV was still a big thing people did and Coach's Corner was appointment viewing in my house(and to be honest I think a lot of the media hype about Cherry's firing is nostalgia for one of the last remnants of the monoculture).

But intermission stuff doesn't make me tune into or not tune into a game. If I'm watching a game and not grabbing a beer or something I'll watch whatever a network airs.

Nope, I tune in soley for the game.  Exception might be near the trade deadline when they do a 2nd intermission rumors section but that's about it.

The slippery slope of combatting racism, discrimination, etc?
Avro, why don't you read the article by Jerry Agar in the Toronto Sun this morning..slippery slope indeed.  I really don't believe Don is a racist anymore than you and I are.  He just wants everyone to respect the Poppy as a symbol of all the freedom we have today. Was he out of line, yes we all agree on what he said and how he said it.

If you want to discount what Don has said all these years be my guest. If you want to speak for yourself and say your beliefs are on par with Cherry's beliefs or vice-versa go ahead. But I really don't think making that call on someone else is a good or fair comparison to make.
I have never said that my beliefs are the same as Don Cherry and I take offence to it. I am not discounting  what he said in any fashion. I have only pointed out that he had the right to say what he said and now he has paid for what he said and been fired.
I have stated that he is from the Jurrasic period and now rests with all the other extinct creatures of this world
No more on this subject from Moi.

I usually watch but I wouldn't really say I care. I mean if I'm watching the game at home already I don't often change the channel*. But sometimes I'll go do things around my place or make a snack or whatever while half-paying attention to the TV. Like others have said, I don't think anyone finds them to be essential viewing anymore. Even something like the Headlines/2nd period intermission segment isn't must-watch anymore since everyone recaps what was said on twitter as it happens.

edit: *I just found it funny that I still used that phrase despite not watching things on traditional cable for like 5+ years now.

Nowhere in the charter of rights and freedoms do you have the right to say whatever you want as the host of a TV show. Many people have made that point to you, you've ignored it. That's why people are doubting your motives.

Honestly, I loved watching coaches corner just to see what Don would say no matter how insane. On Saturday night he crossed the line and now he is gone. No matter whether you loved or hated Don you have to admit he was a very colourful and entertaining fellow. Too bad he crossed  the line and I hope he has a good retirement.

In a round about way this will turn out to be a good thing as it will increase the dialogue in our country about the issues raised.
Even the Punjabi NHL broadcasters said on the National last night that they were going to take on the responsibility of education about these issues with the young in their community.
This is a good thing.
