Montreal 3 NYRangers 2. OT Rangers lead series 2 games to 1.
Talk about flukes, as in fluke goals, the ones where the puck bounces off an arm, leg, ankle, rump(!), chest, stick, skate, what have you. To the Montreal Canadiens, any fluke goal is certainly better than none.
In the first period of OT, the Habs Alex Galchenyuk, racing in to the side of the
Rangers net, took a swipe at a bouncing puck to Lundqvist's side as it partly hit his upper body, part stick and into the net. Game over.
Of course, prior to the overtime winner, the Habs go-ahead goal in the third period, credited to Daniel Briere, hit Rangers Ryan McDonagh's leg before sliding into the net. This was from a shot that rebounded from the back of the net boards out in front with Briere attempting a swipe before hitting McDonagh's leg.
As if that weren't enough of fluke goals, the Rangers needed one of their own. With the goaltender (Lundqvist) pulled in favour of an extra attacker (empty net), and with just a few seconds left in regulations time, and with Montreal leading 2-1, the Rangers Chris Kreider's puck deflection, in the morass of the play ensuing in front of the Canadiens net, was erroneously slid by the back end of Montreal defenceman Alexei Emelin's skate. Game tied. On to OT.
Oh, that wasn't all. The first goal of the game scored by the Rangers was anothor one of those crazy bounces that puck would take in this game. Ask P.K. Subban, Habs defenceman about that one.
Anyway, this game, freaky puok bounces aside, had plenty of chirpiness from thu get go, with plenty of hard-hitting, a fight, scrums, questionable officiating, ete. Include some timely goaltending on the part of Canadiens goaltender Dustin Tokarski who remained focused and collected throughout the game.
