Game 38: Leafs @ Devils - Apr. 6, 7:00pm - CBC, TSN 1050

"Only Leafs on ice this morning in NJ: O'Byrne, Kostka, Frattin, Hamilton, Scrivens."

I hope this means Gardiner and Colbourne get an opportunity to play tonight. Surprised O'Byrne may not play?

why trade for him if you aren't going to play him.

Depth for the postseason.

I'm more concerned with Hamilton/Frattin coming out of the lineup so that McLaren and Orr stay in the lineup.

Fraser McLaren (1st) and Colton Orr (3rd) for offensive zone start percentage, both over 50%.  McLaren is 9th in offensive zone finish percentage and Orr is 15th.

The bigger issue with that.  McLaren 56.4% --> 46.8%
                                        Orr 50.4% --> 44.5%

Those are the worst drops on the team.  So the 4th line plays against garbage opponents and manages to get outplayed consistently.

Combined they take 4.4 penalties/60 minutes and draw 0.7.  So again, they are a net negative in terms of putting the Leafs a man down.

Intangibles I guess....nothing else makes sense.

They are also a net negative because every time Orr/Mcclaren are put out in the offensive zone, it is one fewer opportunity for Kessel, JVR, Kadri, Maccarthur, etc. to start in the offensive zone.  The stats show (unsurprisingly) that no matter who you are, increasing your offensive zone starts improves your offensive chances quite a bit -- I'd rather be improving Kessel's offensive chances than Orr's ...

Basically, every time Orr hits the ice it is a lose-lose-lose all around.

Put Frattin and Hamilton on the wings with McClement on the 4th line and then you can play that line in the defensive zone, and give the offensive zone starts to our offensive stars who can exploit them.

And of course, the injury to Lupul illustrates yet again what a crock of horse---- the idea that if Orr sits on the bench, he "protects our stars" ... ugh.

Sitting Frattin is beyond idiotic.

No kidding.  It is so irritating.

Yeah, but in truth Orr & Frazer are producing as much as Frattin.  Talk about a disappearing act since he came back.

Now, having said that, I agree with you.  I'd be giving him every chance to get out of his rut.

Not me, I say give Joe.C a chance and let Frattin sweat about his job, then put him in. no one gets a free ride in Tor any more.

Except Orr and McLaren.

I've heard somewhere that Frattin needs to be pushed or angry to keep motivated. I'm sure sitting him a game or two will do wonders for his game.

I think only one is needed tonight.

This isn't the national game for those watching outside of Ontario. Boston-Montreal gets that slot this weekend.

Lines tonight:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
MacArthur-Kadri-Kulemin
McClement-Grabovski-Komorov
Orr-Colborne-McLaren

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Liles
Fraser-Franson

Can't wait for Colborne to get bumped from the lineup after mysteriously not producing tonight.

Well in fairness to them they are doing what their skillset dictates and that is to fight.  I certainly don't expect them to provide offence or defence for that matter. It isn't there fault that RC feels the need to keep trotting them both out there.  So they aren't not living up to their billing,  RC is.
