Game 41: Detroit Red Wings vs Toronto Maple Leafs W4-3

They need to call a time out and regroup. The problem I'm seeing is that Detroit is always outnumbering us on the puck and the Leafs are not adjusting their play.

Wilson doesn't have a clue when to use his timeouts. He'll call it when it's 3-2.

There was no whistle for a long time after the goal, and the next whistle is a TV timeout.  Why waste it?  You can't stop play for a timeout.
And let's be honest, when he calls the time-out it would be when the Wings tied it at 3, not after a second goal ;).

This has been an unbelievably awful period of hockey.  The Red Wings are playing great but the Leafs are doing the same thing every shift.  They get the puck, the forwards abandon the defense and they try and pass the puck through 3-4 Red Wings = turnover and another shift of sustained offensive zone pressure for the Wings.

Wilson needs to get the message across to his team in the dressing room.  If not for Gus the Leafs are losing this game despite a great first period.

Right, let's disparage Wilson while the Leafs are up by 2 against Detroit.

Regardless of the situation, a coach should know when his guys need a good kick in the ass.

That means mostly nothing to me in this case, executing a game plan shouldn't have to involve a shoe size for most pros.

The one thing that I hate with the new NHL and I'm sure some would agree is the lack of hitting. I understand the league wanting to crack down on headshots, hits from behind etc and rightly so but I think the league has taken a lot of the hitting away because players are afraid of getting called. I missed the first period and I can understand the RedWings coming out with a sense of urgency but I have not seen anyone take the body in our own end. Free wheeling for Detroit. In the old days a lot of these guys would be laying on their ass.

I'm sure everything that we're saying about the Leafs this period is something a Wings fan would have said after the first. They're a smart veteran team who made adjustments. It's a 60 minute game. Chill out folks.

Short passes, short passes.  And stand up some guys, the Wings had our zone at will.

Well, if someone had said will you take a 3-2 lead going into the 3rd....

On the bright side, for how bad they tend to play in the second, they seem to do well when leading after two. We'll see if the shoehorn fits or not.

If I recall correctly the Leafs haven't lost a game they've lead after 2 periods - that could be in peril tonight.

Smarten up boys!

This is shaping up to be a lesson from a premier veteran team taught to a very young one.  In fact, I would hope they've learned something already.
