General Leafs Talk: Post-Olympics Edition

Holland (and Ashton) are both no longer exempt from waivers starting next season though. So I'm somewhat fine with them staying in the AHL this season, but the team will have to find some room for the two of them in the offseason.

According to Capgeek's waiver calculator, they both still have one more season of waiver exemption remaining after this season.

I thought the 1 there stands for the remainder of this season. But maybe I'm wrong.

You might be right. It's not very clear. I'm pretty sure they already include this season, though.

From the page: "It highlights in red the years or games (whichever he reaches first) remaining on his exemption as of the final day of 2013-14 training camp". 1 year is highlighted in red for him, so this would be his final season of waiver exemption.

Obviously it's great getting Bolland back in the lineup but I would have liked to see what Kulemin could do with a longer stint at centre. It was an extremely minuscule sample size, but he looked pretty good and comfortable in those two games.

Imagine having a strong two way winger who can play on the 2nd or 3rd line but can also line up down the middle when necessary? Of course that would assume he's in their long term plans.

?The games are hell, really,? Bolland said. ?You?re not taking a night off. You?re going into corners and getting marks on your face and you?re coming out with bruises. It?s something you have to prepare for."

"You need these last 22 games to prepare for the playoffs,? he said. ?The playoffs aren?t easy. It?s a long haul. It?s never easy when you?re going off a two-week break here, but for us right now it started last Wednesday. It?s about building towards these playoffs.?

I like tables like the one in this article: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/mirtle-fixing-leafs-defence-was-carlyles-olympic-project/article17103154/

Gives an easy to read sample of how SH% can fluctuate - avg the same number of shots in two stretches, but shoot 12% in one and 8% in the other.  Even the SV%, from .937 to .910 then to .918.

Allot of talk about the 4th line.  Think my biggest worry is if Kadri will be going when play resumes.  With Lupul and Clarkson, I'm not sure who's the defensive-minded one on that line.

Not a surprise as he's the only forward left who is exempt from waivers.

The next big question will be if they have to send down another forward. When Bolland comes off LTIR capgeek has them $19,167 over the salary cap with a 23-man roster. Their numbers are just estimates, so maybe the Leafs banked a bit more cap room during the season than capgeek thinks.

mirtle: Leafs one of lowest shot producing teams in league yet Kessel and JVR both in top 10 in shots. They have more than quarter of team's shots.

Yikes.

We should give them each a gold medal!  ;D

They'll have to make due with their day with the Stanley Cup.  ;)

Up and down and up they go:

@HennyTweets

Ashton and holland have been recalled. Ashton is looking for his 1st nhl goal but does have 13 in 16 games with the marlies. #TMLtalk

This can fuel trade rumors though, called up on trade deadline day!!!

Might have something to do with the 4 call up rule.

I was thinking that. Also with Bolland's reported setback they might want to end the Kulemin as 3rd line center experiment.

The 4 call up rule is gone. The rule now is that a team can't have more than 3 players on the roster that they called up after the deadline. They can make unlimited recalls, as long as there aren't more than 3 guys recalled at a time.
