Possible theory that probably wouldn't apply to the Leafs this year, but...
Would it make sense in some instances where the team that is down 1-0 or 2-0 are more likely to take more shots on net as they're trying to tie the game, whereas the team that's up are more likely to make the safe play of dumping the puck into the opposition's zone?
Food for thought? And again, it doesn't explain a shot differential this wide...
