Goaltending conundrum

Oh, but Allaire is ruining Gustavsson because he's not playing the style he's used to, right?

Maybe he's just a bad goalie.

Bingo.

Ahh, reminds me of the days when we were excited for Tellqvist because Sweden was able to play the "torpedo" formation when he was in net.

HYPE!

This thing that Allaire is attempting to do with both Reimer and Gustavvson reminds me of another era in Leafs history, when they had a promising young netminder from the then Czechoslovakia, named Jiri Crha, who displayed a butterfly & flopping style, an exciting acrobatics style that suited the Leafs squad well.

Critics claimed that Crha's 'unorthodox' style was flawed and that he flopped too much, so, the Leafs brass set about changing his goaltending style.  Instead of improvement, Crha was never quite the same.  He was 'ruined'.

I don't like Reimer's too low crouching style.  It doesn't appear to suit him properly.  It seems that many of the shots go over his head or shoulder side.  Also, why does he seem to emit a 'surprised' reaction each time he is scored upon in his crouching position?

Gustavvson perhaps may be a better student of the side-to-side method, since he has a longer reach pad-wise and arm-wise.  Still, he too would be better off if he is just himself.

The fact that the Leafs goaltending duo of Reimer and Gus is largely an inexperienced group suggests that it will take time and plenty of patience if we are to see both of them succeed more aptly at the NHL level.

The question now is..can the Leafs afford to wait?

Gustavsson has said himself that he was trying to follow Allaire's style even in Sweden. It's not like they're trying to teach the butterfly to Dominik Hasek.

According to LeBrun, the Leafs have been offer Khabibulin. No word on the price. He has another year left on deal, at $3.75M. His number in Edmonton haven't been great for the past couple months, but, he's shown glimpses of still being able to bring it. He does turn 40 halfway through next season, though. If the Leafs could get Edmonton to take Komisarek (if he'll waive for the Oilers) or another contract, and not much else, it might be worth considering.

I agree.

Do you think that Edmonton would also take Gus?  We do not want three goalies on the Leafs roster, there is no room in the Marlies, and it would give Edmonton a backup at a relatively low cost since Gus is an UFA at the end of the year.

I don't know... I guess. He might be the type of player that wouldn't depreciate much over a year. That is to say, if the cost to acquire is roughly similar to what me might be able to get for him at this time next year (if need be) then sure?

Well, I'm hoping for essentially a straight contract for contract type deal, with maybe a 6th round pick or something similar thrown in, so, even if the Leafs get nothing for him at the next deadline, it's no big deal. If he costs real assets, then I'd pass.

In a heartbeat, just to get rid of the NMC'd lumbering #7...

If it's to depend on him for much and costs much, no thanks.

It really pains me to say this because I really like him and my man crush on him almost (ALMOST) equals LHF's regular crush on Lupul but maybe an even swap for Army makes some sense for both teams.

If a deal can't be made involving Komisarek, Armstrong might be the next best option - especially if the Leafs feel they're close to picking up someone like Ott.

Yeah, and it's not like we'd expect Khabibulin to play 60+ games for us or anything next season. Ideally, one of the other two would continue to grow under his tutelage and carry a good chunk of the load too.

Ugh.  Ugh ugh ugh.  Even dumping Komi I wouldn't do it.  Bringing in a washed-up vet is the last thing this team needs to develop long-term.  Cripes, if they do this they should have just kept Jiggy, at least he could have mentored Reims and Gus. Khabibulin isn't the kind who'll be mentoring anybody.

Are you just speculating at that?

No, I'm basing it on past reports about his personality (rather like Belfour's in not liking understudies).  I don't know anything about his language skills, but that could possibly also be a barrier.

Today's waivers should be interesting. I believe TOR's Darryl Boyce will be claimed. @StapeNewsday reports NYI will put Brian Rolston on.

For nothing?... Maybe?

What does Brian Rolston have to do with goaltending?

He's confusing Brian Rolston with Dwayne Roloson?
